I am interested in ditchin windows and running Linux, either SuSE or Ubuntu
There is absolutely no reason to expect Linux will not run on your system. Actually older system seem to take to Linux better than new ones, probably because of driver availabilities. I have run Red Hat on a XPS D300 which is older than a T550.
I am in total agreement with msgale. I had an old XPS D333 running Debian "Sarge" and Slackware. While I am not a big fan of Ubuntu or Suse, either will most likely work well with your system and are good choices for linux beginners. While you are becoming acclimated to linux, you may not want to ditch windows just yet. I believe while installing, Ubuntu will automatically shrink your Windows partition and create a new Ubuntu partition out of the free space. You will be able to boot to either operating system. See the link below, it looks like a good guide for installing Ubuntu.
