Dell slowed by RAM problem. Please advise.

My mother bought a Dell computer about two years ago. It came installed with Windows XP and worked fine. In fact, it even came with 55 Gigabytes of Memory!
But since then, we have installed spybot, antiviruses, and other programs. And just from using different programs over the years it has slowed down and gotten jerky when switching between and loading programs and windows.
I read that sometimes there is a dust problem, but I didn't think that's what this is! Could that be part of it? I don't feel like opening the motherboard's case.
What was the problem? I searched around the Computer, and it turns out there are only 128 MB of RAM. Then I read a web article entitled "128 MB RAM NOT SUFFICIENT FOR WINDOWS XP" !
Not knowing lots about computers, my mother must simply have bought what an advertisment recommended? Besides, at the time 128 was alot more RAM then on previous models.
Well, besides buying a new RAM cartridge, do you recommend using a program like CLEAN RAM or RAM BOOSTER as a bandaid? Is there one you prefer?
I can send you a picture of the Taskmanager's values if that helps. Should I raise the page file initial value to a very high level? The original setting I found the pagefile on was 192 MB . One website recommends setting Pagefile to 1.5 times the RAM. However, I read another site that recommends bringing Pagefile+RAM to 500 MB.
