I'm having the same problem on my comp.  Mine read RUNDLL 32.EXE. and I also have the wupdater.exe must end program now prompt and the two are really annoying HELP

Which version of Windows are you running?  Is what you posted the full and exact (including spelling) text of the error message?  What other programs are running when you receive the error message?

You are infected by spware/malware.  wupdater.exe is part of a spyware program that you picked up off the internet or by installing a file sharing program like Kazaa.  To get rid of all spyware on your computer see the following message and download Spybot and Ad-Aware.  After installing these programs, make sure to update to the latest spyware defintions, then run the programs and have them delete all of the garbage they find.

If you have installed a file sharing program like Kazaa, get rid of it.  It will no longer run after you remove the spyware anyway.

When you shut down your computer it allows the processes running to close down in their own time some utilities will allow you to force processes to shut down foster such as "Regscrub XP" ,

Sometimes a program has become a bit unstable in the ram and is caught in a loop so it wont close down so you are given the choice to return to windows to see why it is not responding or to force it to close.

RunDLL.32.exe is your interface ( Task bar etc.) sometimes if you are using an imported theme or for what ever reason it just gets stuck so you have to force a shut down , some times you will start your computer up and the theme isnt applied so you have to go into desktop properties and apply it manually.

It is an inherantly unstable part of Windows but you can get alternatives that are more stable . There is an open source interface called Litestep HERE .

As for Kazaa get rid of it and get KLite or Overnet they are spyware free.

Sorry. I assumed too much. Yes, the message was typed exactly as it was written-fully. No other programs were running because I was shutting down.

To be more precise - is the file that is causing problems really RunDLL.32.EXE or is it rundll32.exe?
