I need help ending Chkdsk, it runs every time I start up my computer. I've been wanting to run my disk defragmenter but it won't allow me to do it because Chkdsk is scheduled to run.
I've checked in my scheduled tasks folder but it's not listed there, so apparently it's in the boot sequence?
Some time ago I was having a problem with my computer freezing for five minutes while loading whichever user I was logging onto my computer. I called the Dell number and the individual had me run Chkdsk, but I never asked how to end it at that time. I've never recieved a message saying to run Chkdsk due to a corrupted file or anything of that sort...it was just something the live support person on the phone had me run to try and solve the problem. I've not been able to find any help topics on how to end Chkdsk on other forums....and I'm pretty computer illiterate when it comes to something like this, haha. :smileyindifferent:
Scroll to "
Check Disk - Disk Checking Runs Upon Boot" and follow the instructions that accompany this selection. One of those suggestions should work for you.
I succeded in getting Chkdsk to stop running every time I restarted my computer, so that's excellent.
However (and I tried all the things mentioned in that link you sent me) it still won't let me run Disk Defragmenter.
Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume (c:)
Please run chkdsk/f."
I've gone into start/run/cmd and entered chkdsk/f. It says-
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\>chkdsk/f The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)y
The volume will be checked the next time your system restarts.
C:\>y
I restart and it runs Chkdsk, but I get the same message when I try to run Disk Defragmenter again.
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated...I appologize if this is something easy to fix and you grow impatient. I wish I knew more about these sort of things.
Okay- Well I followed that and it was something I had done previously under one of the fixes in the link Flooby replied with. It's not running Chkdsk when I start it up anymore, but I'm still getting that message I copied and pasted above when trying to run Disk Defragmenter.
The only thing I haven't done as I am not sure which regestry entry should read this is-
