Go to SolutionHow get "which device did you plug in?" window
In the beginning I checked don't show this in the future in the "which device did you plug in" window. Now I need to record something and actually need that option. I can't find it.
I supposedly could enable it in Realtek HD Audio Manager, but for some reason I can't find the Realtek HD Audio Manager either. I do have Realtek HD Audio driver installed, only the Manager I can't find.

I found a solution by myself because Dell Assist gave me absolutely no help at all, it was a miserable runaround with no positive result in the end. I checked all the sound drivers and all seemed to be working OK, but there was no way I could get sound in my headphones and Dell Assist DID NOT tell me how, nor could I find a way to select headphones instead of speakers under Settings - Sound, because under Choose your output device the ONLY choice is Speakers/Headphones, there are NO separate controls!! Brilliant design!!
Also, I cannot understand why the updates for drivers and all kinds of things that one gets periodically result in the elimination of this essential little screen that asks Which device did you plug in? whereby you can choose an output device.
So, somehow I discovered that reinstalling REaltek ALC3289, which my computer says is an older driver than the one I have installed already, solved this wretched problem.

from start menu open MaxAudioPro
click on picture with the headphones on the left
bottom center click on advanced and select check box - "Show Pop-Up dialog when device is connected"
Open MaxAudioPro - click Headphone - select advanced bottom middle - click check box

Note to users of MaxxAudioPro.
If you accidentally tick the "Do not show this dialog again" in the popup that appears after inserting an audio device into the audio jack, you can re-enable this again.
1. Open the MaxxAudioPro application (Windows start menu > type "MaxxAudioPro").
2. Click the image in the "Playback" panel on the left side (picture of head with headphones on)
3. At the bottom of the screen, click the "Advanced" link.
4. Tick the "Show pop-up dialog when device is connected" checkbox.

If you look in the hidden icons on the taskbar, do you have a W icon. If so, can you click it and then click to open a UI for the audio?
If so, select the speaker panel (far left) and then check under the Advanced section to re-enable the popup.

I had same problem and i solved it by finding Realtek HD Audio manager. It was here: C:\Program Files\Realtek\Audio\HDA.

In C:\Program Files\Realtek\Audio\HDA i just launched program called "RtkNGUI64" like on that video and there automatically popped which device did you plug in.

I've been pulling my hair out trying to get sound through my headphones and tried every possible solution without success. You can't differentiate between speakers and headphones with the Realtek software. I tried to get the HD audio manager panel up like some had suggested because I could see a tick box for the pop up asking 'which device did you plug in' but I couldn't find out how to open the panel. Finally I tried your solution and installed the older driver ALC3289 and hey presto I've got the pop up box back so that I can tell my laptop I just plugged in my headphones and actually use them. What a ridiculous system!! Many thanks to you Dany900.

Same issue with the Latitudes 3390 2-in-1's latest version doesn't work (A13) older version 6.0.1.8295, A00 does!

Geeez ... I tried for like an hour to get my headset microphone back when it stopped working after a windows update. Your solution finally worked. I got the popup back using the option available in MaxxAudioPro. Somehow during the Windows update, the device got changed back to "headphones" instead of "headset". I changed it back to "headset" and it worked.
(Why is this extremely important option to choose headset or headphones only available in this stupid popup window that is almost impossible to find after it is hidden?! Windows 10 is a hot pile of garbage.)

I installed Waves Maxx Audio Pro. This produces the popup that I was looking for.
