I wonder what is wrong with the Dell Windows XP reinstall guide. In this it is recommended to delete the C-partition, create it again and the format. But why deleting the partition? Couldn't you just format the existing C-partition without first deleting it? I got a lot of trouble when a followed the Dell reinstall guide on a hard drive with two primary partitions C and D. When I deleted C and recreated it it became an extended partition instead of primary which resulted in that the start files ntldr, ntdetect etc. was placed on the D-partition instead of on C, and both of them were consequently called system partitions. This means that you cannot change drive letters and other drawbacks.

 

So my question is:

Is it not possible to format the system partition C without first deleting it? If so, why is this way to go not described in the reinstall guide from Dell?
