Your'e probably right, in which case I would still suggest trying to reset the icon name by right click, rename, then change icon by right click desktop, properties, desktop tab, customize desktop, etc. May be a good idea also to save the theme with a new name (not sure that's needed).

Or use regedit, navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Double click the Default value in the above key and enter the text you desire.  Right click on the Desktop and select Refresh to see the changes.

Thanks.  It seems to be working, for the moment.  However, I also downloaded XP_DesktopIconRename.exe and that seems to be right on point as well.

Except ...

while it now looks like the customized name is set in there, on rebooting after logging off the icon still returns to a generic one instead of the one of choice.  This happens even though I entered this configuration as a new theme as suggested.

Thanks to all, but the problem still isn't resolved ... Every time I refresh the desktop the name change I made for "My Computer" is lost, and the customized icons for "My Computer" the and "Recycle Bin" return to the generic ones (although the name change to "Trash" does stay).

Apparently, the desktop has lost the capacity to memorize the settings for aspects of this profile, including system icons and custom names for "My Computer."

Any other suggestions?
