I've been having the same problem for months now - trying to debug it myself and not getting anywhere.
I've run memory testing programs, disk drive testing programs, cpu 'stressing' programs, updated all of my drivers , check for spyware/malware , viruses, trojans etc. - all tests come back normal -
I found a site that recommends free tech support forums and sites and became active with a few of them
This will point you to 'best troubleshooting sites' (left side of page) - you might try them - most responses say its probably a memory error - good luck and if you get an answer let me know please.
I reinstalled my original Intel Chipset drivers today and since then have
not had any reboots or 0x0000008e's - fingers crossed but would recommend you do the
same
Not your issue specifically but I will share my 0X0000008E stop error resolution, all hardware and memory in my system is 100%:
I resolved my issue by removing all of the Sonic Solutions application specifically PxHelp20.sys
First off my Dell was shipped with Roxio Creator My DVD COMBO Le in witch I'm not invested in at all.
I then purchased the latest Pinnacle Studio Plus as my main desire is for video editing.
The Pxhelp20.sys driver conflicts/competes with the Pinnacle - VOB Computersysteme GmbH ASAPIW2K.sys driver causing hard failures MS blue screen stop errors.
The process of using XP's uninstall did not however remove the Upper Filter driver PxHelp20.sys by Roxio Sonic Solutions.
I had to manually search for the PxHelp20.sys file and removed it (moved it to temp location prior to deleting it completely).
Then to removed the Upper Filter driver call from the registry by using Filter Detection and Removal Tool 4.6 FilterCheck.zip
The free FilterCheck utility ask for each filter driver entry prior to removing so your safe is you wish to keep other entries and are just targeting a specific one for removal.
My goal was to get Pinnacle software suite as my primary application so I didn't mind dumping all of the Sonic products.
I'm satisfied now and my system works very well!
Hope this post helps save some one else's pain!

Hi DelSolSea I'm still getting many 0x0000008e crashes. I downloaded the filter check tool you referenced - it found some upper and lower filters and asked if I wanted to delete them I have no idea what they are and am afraid of deleting them - can you point me to some information about these filters? I have Roxio Easy CD creator 5 - but am not trying to bur or even read CD's when the 8e crash occurs. Thanks much Mike P

If you google the stop code you get different results. That's one of the first things that came up. Not sure if it helps.
