XPS 15 9560, Type-C not working after 2004 Windows update
Hi,
I have a Dell XPS 15 9560 (purchased 1 year warranty expired on February 27, 2019), which I updated to Windows 10 2004 last week. Now when I put in a USB Type-C into the port, Windows will make the noise recognize it then drop it. It drops frequently. All other USB ports are working fine.
What I have tried = - BIOS is the most latest one - All drivers are up to date (using Dell SupportAssist) - Firmware is up to date
I can't understand why it keeps dropping, any help would be appreciated.
As a workaround: it does work when whatever-you-use is plugged in before you start up, so at least you can use a VGA dongle or LAN with it. Tried it, copied files from and to a thumbdrive, connected external displays and so an. So at least, I'm sure it's not a hardware issue.
Just chiming in to say that I'm in the same boat. My usb hub will work maybe one out of 15 times I plug it in. Windows usually recognizes it for a second, with the USB 3.1 eXtensible host controller popping up in device manager before disappearing and the device never recognizing. Prior to the update it was working fine.

Same here, it worked fine, then stopped for months, then worked again for weeks, then stopped for another period of time which a difficultly remember, then worked again... I've been very optimistic and bought the last dell usb-c dock. Since I really liked it and since I like dell stuff I decided to get it back to Amazon and buy instead the thunderbolt version (one day I'll be driving a 4k monitor... and subsequentially I'll get a newer Dell laptop, of course!). Of course the dream lasted few days and that freaking port stopped working again. I still could use the external monitor as I always did with a cheaper 7-in-1 unofficial adapter, the dock was still charging the laptop but no USB signal. In fact no ethernet was flowing out of there as well. Very frustrating.
After deferring 2004 Windows update for 4 months to let the dust settle, my XPS 15 9560 updgraded itself and I have also entered the Type-C death spiral. I have exactly the same symptoms as the rest of you except my little added bonus is that it is wrecking drive partitions on an external drive.
I have an external drive enclosure connected via USB-C which contains 2 drives (non RAID, 2 drives, 2 drive letters). I have used this setup for about 5 years with no issues. After the 2004 upgrade and a week of use, I rebooted the laptop and at the BIOS screen Windows started running disk checks and repairing one of these 2 external drives, it then started repairing the other external drive. Upon Windows booting, both drives appeared but were inaccessible. Disk Manager could see them and could see they had NTFS partitions, but access was denied. Usual processes, taking ownership via security tab etc did not work. Event Viewer showed NTFS had found disk corruptions in the two partitions and decided a disk check at next boot was needed. This found heaps of MFT issues and the end result was 2 inaccessible drives.
These hard drives were decent quality Hitachi HGST NAS-level drives and not used excessively, but no worries, I have backups of the data and I put 2 spare lightly used (<500 hours each) HGST NAS hard drives into the enclosure, partitioned the drives, formatted them and restored the data. Next reboot all is well, a day passes, another reboot with no problems. Then I get exactly the same issue.
OK, so I have ruled out the original drives being the problem, but I put 2 brand new HGST NAS hard drives into the enclosure, partitioned the drives, formatted them and restored the data. You guessed it a few days later the same issue.
OK, so I have ruled out drives being the problem, I use a spare enclosure (same manufacturer) and a new USB-C lead. I partitioned the drives, formatted them and restored the data. Unbelievably, the issue happened again.
All while this is happening, I have two other identical drive enclosures connected via USB-A with no issues. Event Viewer is littered with WHEA-Logger errors. Through testing with 6 different drives, 2 enclosures and 2 USB-C leads, my only conclusion is that my USB-C connection/interface/driver is to blame. What is weird is that at my office, I have a USB-C dock which connects to 2 monitors, printer, USB-security fob. All of that works faultlessly.
I now have no faith connecting a hard drive to my USB-C connector on this 9560. I've just ordered a USB-A multi-port hub and the enclosure will be connecting through that from now on.
