I recently bought the Alienware M17 R3 144hz with GSYNC and the battery life is about 1hr30mins because it is running on dedicated mode. I have seen reviews from youtubers with the same model turning on optimus mode using FN+ F7 but mine never works.
Someone recommended that i install Alienware on screen display but i noticed that piece of software is for the older versions of Alienware laptops.
Download the new Alienware OSD application from Support website and install it. Make sure you get the version 1.7.6.0.
There was a problem with the version 1.7.5.0 installed from factory, caused by a Windows update. I had the same problem with my M15 R3, but Dell already fixed the issue with the version 1.7.6.0
How to use the NVIDIA Optimus Technologyto switch between an integrated graphics card and a discrete card to save power by using the right card for the right application.

The systems that ship with high-refresh panels (and RTX GPUs) are not Optimus-compliant. The discrete GPU is hardwired to the display panel on these.
If you want an Optimus-compliant M17 R3 and are within the 30 day return period, arrange a system exchange for one with a lower refresh panel and a GTX GPU. On these, you can use Optimus to enable the onboard GPU to save power when that's required.
Also note: GSync requires a hardwired display to the GPU -- a system that supports Optimus will not support GSync (and vice-versa).
