New R3 User
My son just took delivery of his R3 yesterday and has set it up. Brief specs are:
875W power supply
Windows 7 Ultimate
i7 2600
1GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6870 video card
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Audio
4GB 1866 memory
256GB SSD
The machine has been running now for about 18 hrs. without freezing. The main difference I see between his R3 and most of the others is the memory type and the SSD - this may or may not be pertinent to the freezing issue. Also, BIOS ver A05 is installed.
Currently, the only issue he has is a popping sound that randomly occurs thru his speakers (speakers are from his old computer). Does anyone else have this problem and, if so, how did you resolve it? I plan on updating this thread as time goes on. Even if the freezing issue does not appear, Dell needs to find out what the common denominator is that cauese the problem in so many of these units.
It would probably help if other new users also add to this thread (or start new ones) as they receive and start testing their machines - the more data Dell has, the faster this problem will be resolved.
Thanks,
Harvey

I ordered my machine March 15 and received it in the beginning of April
[Edit] I took another look and my BIOS is A05, not A04. Although, In the Dell driver page, their newest listed version is A04. I have no idea why they haven't updated their list.
Perhaps Chris knows.
The machine came with version A05 installed - the latest version on the Dell site is A04. There is no indication of where A05 can be obtained. BTW, how old is your R3 - it would be interesting if the problems were confined to R3's manufactured prior to a certain date (i.e., defective batch of parts, etc.)
There's an interesting discussion going on wrt a similar issue with the XPS 8300's. Someone just indicated that resetting the BIOS (removing and re-inserting the CMOS battery) may have fixed their freezing issue. You may want to follow that thread:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19374123.aspx?PageIndex=4
From what I've read, the freezing can occur under any circumstance - even when idle (screen saver). Also, in the XPS 8300 thread that I previously mentioned, the results are mixed - resetting the BIOS (removing/reseating the CMOS battery) is not always working. They're now talking about replacing the CMOS battery since there was a report of a bad batch being used.

Hi,
I also have an SSD BUT I do have freezing and BSOD issues.
Harvey, the BSODs and freezing are totally random in my case, I have never managed to exactly replicate it, it doesn't matter what I do. Sometimes it can go a day. Sometimes I have multiple BSODs and freezing in a day.
875W power supply
i72600k
1 GB GTX 460
16384 MB 1600 MHz DDR 3
Harvey, you say you have BIOS ver A05. Where can you find that? The most recent BIOS version that is displayed on the DELL driver page for Aurora R3 is the A04 which is what I have?
My DELL driver list doesn't list the A05.
Chris, where can I find the A05 and should I update my BIOS from A04 to A05?
Best Regards
