If I run the Disk cleanup will it take items I need out of the PC, Will it hurt or damage the PC, Will it affect the promance of the PC?
I wrote Dell this question there answer was to preform a restore of Windows XP..WHY???

Using Disk clean up removes unnecessary files that can take up room and slow down your computer. But with 256K and a 40 gb hard drive I don't think you're seeing performance slow down. It's a maintenance feature.

I don't know. They seem to have two answers -- restore or reinstall.
Disk cleanup removes files that you probably don't need. It selects the ones in your trash that you've not removed -- they still take up space. And your temporary internet files. They take up space and are there for quicker browsing back and forth -- a copy is saved in your temporary folder for that purpose. Also, what's kept in the temporary internet files are "cookies" which make for easy access to sites where you have a login in and asked to save your name and password, like this board. Otherwise, you have to login each and every time. A cookie will remember your name and password for sites such as this. And it remembers your preferences such as how you view this board.
You can have the disk clean up remove them. It's safe. The only inconvenience is having to login into a frequently used site.

I check my recylce bin and dump anything not needed, also the temporary files, most of which I dump and then defrag if it's needs it, in other words, get rid of anything not required to free up disk space.
No, it wo'nt hurt or harm your PC.
