I had a PS/2 splitter that worked "backwards," it only works if the keyboard is plugged into the mouse port and the mouse plugged into the keyboard port.

From your description, does the keyboard work alone, though the splitter, or only when directly to the PS/2 port?

I ordered another splitter to see how that one might work better.

I just tried a couple of tests with the one I have -
1 - mouse works fine by itself plugged into either side
2 - keyboard works fine by itself plugged into either side
3 - when both plugged in - the mouse stops working,

Your splitter is faulty. It is not wired correctly. Get another brand and you should be right.

There should be no diodes or anything like that in the cable, if you look at the socket there are 2 pins each side for the mouse or keyboard. Data and clock. The bad cable was shorting either or both device data or clock signals. It works more like a double adapter than a splitter. If you have the old one ( still in a bin ), meter it and post the results. Most of the adapters only run the signals to one socket, and that is why some people have bought one that the mouse only works on the keyboard plug and vice versa. The wrong plug in the wrong mold.
