Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), xp - win 7
Hi, I'm still fighting to get the ati radeon xpress 1150 working in my Inspiron 1501 using "MPS Multiprocessor HAL" (it's the only way I could make this poor designed laptop can handle audio interfaces without pops and clicks).
I don't understand sooo much about what I'm talking, but according to this web page , the abstraction layer I'm using lacks "information" to comunicate properly with the integrated radeon xpress. I've installed windows xp using Standard PC HAL and the video card works perfectly (but not the audio interface) ... so why does it work with every HAL but not just with the one that I need to work with?? (Standard PC HAL isn't meant for laptops either)
I need to use MPS Multiprocessor HAL because I read somewhere that using this the IRQ number goes up to 128, reducing IRQ sharing conflict (audio interfaces need exclusiveness).
Now here are my questions:
1- Is it a way to modify/recompile (or whatever the term is) the MPS HAL (halapic.dll) to make it Radeon Xpress 1150 friendly?
2- Does anyone know if the Abstraction Layer can be forced in Windows 7? (I recently installed it to give it a try, but it went right to ACPI)
3- Does anyone know the right person to ask this kind of weird questions??? :emotion-42:

Your right about HAL in XP. I use alot of OS's so i get confused. Sorry MYBAD
BUT try the analog limiter on the US-25 which according to specs is designed to eliminate noise interference (popping and hiss) and also check out this link on the PRO 24 about tuning for XP

there are some hotfixes for XP from MCSOft and other tips specifically for XP specifically this quote struck me as pertinent
"If you have been through all of the above and you are still having trouble with clicks and pops in your audio stream, something in your system may be hogging the PCI bus and you should check the PCI latency timer values of the devices on your computers PCI bus."
there is a link attached to that on how to change the latency on PCI
It seems like to me you should be able to use the standard Multi CPU HAL

I have never used that equipment but I think it was designed for standard HAL's (multi or single) so that it should work properly

I, the option "detect HAL" is not present in win xp, and it would probably detect "multiprocessor ACPI" , thanks anyway.
audio interfaces: I have the edirol ua-25 (usb) and the saffire pro 24 (firewire via express card) ... they both throw clicks and pops in audio if I'm not using MPS Multiprocessor HAL

not familiar with Win7 but in xp and vista if you run MSCONFIG from run or search and then go to boot and then advanced options you can check off detect HAL and restart
if your inspiron is a dual core you would want a multi processor HAL not the standard ACPI
I have the Vostro 1000 with the same video card
what do you mean by audio interfaces? speakers or mic inputs? are you recording?
