Inspiron 8500 volume button physically broken
My volume buttons on my I8500 are broken (as in physically broken). For those of you who don't have the same setup, the raise and lower buttons are one piece of plastic embedded into the plastic tray area surrounding the keyboard. This dual-button piece has been growing more and more tilted, so that now, when I want to lower my volume, I have to press the lower volume button quite far down into the tray (trust me it's definitely abnormal). Has anyone else experienced this issue, and is there any way to fix it?

Are you still under warrenty? Just call Dell and get a new centre console sent out. I had this problem when my i8600 first got to me just over a month ago, and got t replaced no problems.

It's easy to take the console out, but be careful when doing so. Look at the two first pictures here: http://www.bay-wolf.com/8500video.htm
The button assembly is fixed by 3 screws. Maybe they have come loose sou you only have to tighten them. Otherwise, like stu suggested, call Dell and ask them to ship you a replacement console.230

Try out what HMKrieps suggested first just in case.... that's the first thing I tried too but it didn't help mine becase the plastic inside was broken, but you never know, it might fix yours. If not, yes you can just get the centre console replaced. I requested and did it all through e-mail because I find that they understand what you are going on about and what you need a lot more easly when its in writing... but you can call tech support if you want to get the replacement too.

Actually, the part is called the face plate bezel, and if you look at your Service Manual, you will see a list of user replaceable parts. Look there for the part no.230

its actually the LCD hinge cover assembly - part # 8T888. call support and have it replaced.

Sorry, I'm not into the official names
. I have always called it the centre console or the power bezel.
