Maybe your download got corrupted.. try redownloading it...

 

Here are the instructions from Dell:

 

Download

1. Click Download Now, to download the file.
2. When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In: window appears.
3. From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4. If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file icon appears on your desktop.

Install

1. Double-click the new icon on the desktop. For example labeled R166200.EXE.
2. The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R166200.EXE. (Example path). Write down this path so the executable (Example - Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3. The Self-Extractor window appears.
4. Click OK.
5. After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor window is still open, close it.
6. Click the Start button and then click Run.
7. Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R12345 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8. Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

 

 

 

 

No it did not get corrupted - on the dell website it actually says its 327kb.

 

Anyway i dont think i need to install it cuz it looks like for some reason installing the chipset already installed it, i can see it in device manager.

 

So i just installed the turbo memory one.

 

Will i notice a difference? I dunno if it has any affect but playing COD4 frame seems to suffer a bit and i have latest nvidia drivers....dunno if it is related.

 

Unless your laptop supports the ability to use more than one hdd that you can configure with RAID, it is not needed at all.

I installed the turbo memory which is optional so i guess i pretty much wasted my time installing it...

I mostly use the laptop for gaming, so chipset and video card is sufficient enough yeh?

Will the turbo and matrix make any difference 2 my gaming? If not i wont bother.

 

 

What model computer?

Generally the smaller Matrix Storage Manager download is just the drivers.  Sometimes it includes the Matrix Storage Manager Console which isn't necessary if you aren't running a RAID setup.

You need to have a Turbo Memory card installed to fully utilize the Turbo Memory download.  It will also update the AHCI hard drive drivers but without Turbo Memory installed and switched on in the BIOS it won't add the Turbo Memory console nor do anything for your system.  The Vista installation disk installed Matrix Storage Manager drivers already.  Any additional downloads like the one the Dell download offers or the (newer) ones directly from Intel have patches and fixes that are detailed in the readme files.  If the Vista-installed drivers seem to work, you may not want to do anything.

 

Turbo Memory was an Intel invention a couple years ago before flash memory got so cheap but has been all but abandoned by Intel.  About the only place you can find (1GB) Turbo Memory cards anymore is on Amazon.  In Vista, you can use bigger and cheaper USB drives or Compact Flash cards if such cards are supported by your system.

My computer is a Dell XPS M1530.

 

I checked my device mananger and uninstall program menu and I can see Matrix Storage Controller, so that gets it out of the way.

However I have installed the turbo memory, not sure what effect it has? When i input my model on the dell website it showed matrix and turbo - so I assume my laptop came with hardware which supports those 2.

I have a SD card slot, is that related to turbo memory?

So if there was no point in installing turbo should i remove it? I cant seem to find it so can i leave it as it is?
Wont affect my system in anyway will it? The installation went through ok for turbo - still dont know what effect it has but im sure some parts benefit from it lol.

 

Last time i checked the BIOS i saw something set to AHCI. I need to check again.

If the Turbo Memory shows as available driver for your model, that doesn't necessarily mean you have a Turbo Memory module (it shows for my M1330 too but I didn't have Turbo Memory).  If you don't have a Turbo Memory Module, installing the Dell Turbo Memory driver will have no effect.  It will install the Matrix Storage Manager drivers and the Turbo Memory Drivers if you have the module installed and activated in the BIOS.  No Turbo Memory card and it just forgoes the drivers but updates the Matrix Storage Manager drivers.  Depending on your BIOS, the Turbo Memory Console software may be installed but when you open it under Programs it won't let you do anything because there isn't anything to do.  In other words, if you don't have a Turbo Memory card, there won't be anything you need to remove because it didn't install anything.

 

Turbo Memory isn't related to the SD card slot.  You'd have to look under the WiFi door on the bottom to see whether you have the module.  My understanding is that most XPS 1530 don't.   It looks similar-to and is the same size as the WiFi card but no antenna connectors.  It would be in the WWAN slot if you have it (you'll know exactly what I mean once you look).

 

It's not as complicated as this diatribe may sound.  I wanted to try to explain it as much as I could because I was wrestling with the same exact questions and concerns as you about 9 months ago and wanted to share what I've learned over the course of installing Vista (and a Turbo Memory module) probably two dozen times experimentally (I'm constantly looking for the most stable installation that uses the least amount of resources).
