No bootable devices

Help! I am a novice PC user trying to resolve an issue with my Inspiron 6400 laptop, running XP.

For no obvious reason I had a blue screen appear with the "unmountable boot volume" message appear. Having looked at some other threads I then tried to boot from my XP disk but the computer said "no bootable devices". In case I needed to completely re install XP, I have tried to recover photos etc. from the hard drive by removing the drive from the laptop and trying to access it using USB and an Integral external enclosure to extract data to a desktop. However the desktop states it does not recognise the USB device.

I am trying to find out if the hard drive is now unusable and I need to buy a new one or is there anything I can do to resolve issue and hopefully retain the data on the hard drive.

I tried running some of the diagnostics tests and the "read test" came up as an uncorrectable data error.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Before placing the hard drive in the USB enclosure, you may need to set the jumper to Master.

This system uses a serial ATA drive - so no master or slave.

Does the drive spin up at all?  Does the notebook still recognize it?  If not, it's toast - you'll need to decide whether a data recovery service is worth the cost (well into four figures for a recovery).

If the drive does spin up, consider trying Ontrack's Easy Recovery.  It's free to try and at a couple of hundred dollars if it looks like it'll be successful, far cheaper than any other option you have.
