Precision M6500 - confusing audio problems

Hi everyone!

I am thoroughly confused with the audio system on my new Precision M6500.

When I plug in headphones, one of three things will happen:

1) nothing. Changing the audio level controller in the start bar makes that dinging noise in the headphones, so they're working, but all audio continues to play through the speakers

2) some audio will play through the headphones, but the rest will play through the speakers - even when both sources are within the same application (very annoying for teleconferencing)

3) all audio will play through the headphones (this is the desired result but unfortunately rare)

I hope someone can shed some light on how to set my audio up properly!.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Problem solved. For anyone else reading this, the problem was that I use a headset, and the first time I plugged it in, Win7 added it as an audio device labeled "headphones", which was a little misleading. Disabling that makes the audio work as it should... until I plug it in again, which I can deal with.

usually, you have to right click the speaker icon, select "Playback Devices" and select your desired listening device as the default device.  I haven't found a better way yet.  Sorry.
