2001FP Backlight "edge bleed" - problem or normal?
Just got this yesterday as part of my new system. Love everything about it, but notice some definite "edge bleed" from the backlight. Doesn't seem noticible except when the screen is totally black -- like during XP boot, or if the monitor is turned on with no video input signal (computer off). Under those conditions, the otherwise uniform black is definitely "whiter" in several locations, mostly near the top and left edges of the screen. With other screen images, or even darkish solid color backgrounds, it can't be seen. Should I be concerned? Is the default brightness setting for the backlight just extremely high? I haven't tried messing with any monitor settings yet (I faded out about 1 am after finally getting the Gen 3 all set up...). Monitor is hooked up DVI.
Mine is doing exactly the same thing. Except it's on the top right hand corner of the monitor about 3 inches. Looks like a white glow when the screen is totally black. I e-mailed tech support with my concern yesterday and have not heard back.
I am not sure if this is the norm or not but I am not happy with it.
My brand new 2001fp is doing exactly the same thing in the upper right corner. You may also want to run the calibrator program to check for dead pixels:
I didn't notice any while running normal applications, but after running the above, I found 5 dead pixels scattered throughout the screen. Not sure if this is considered normal by Dell standards.
I have the same problem in the upper left portion of my monitor. I was actually told by a support rep that this was a "feature" of the new monitors and not a defect and that I was being shipped a replacement monitor only for customer satisfaction and that if this new monitor had the same "feature", they would not replace it. Needless to say, I had to laugh.
I haven't run the test for dead pixels yet, but none have leaped off the screen at me. I did email Dell and told them I considered the degree of non-uniformity of the backlighting to be objectionable and that I wanted them to ship me a replacement BEFORE I send this one back to them; haven't heard back yet. The edge bleed whitening effect occurs at a number of different locations -- top RH corner is worst, but it also occurs along pretty much the entire RH 1/3 of the top edge, also on the top LH corner, bottom LH corner, and portions along the LH edge. Each place where it exists, the whitening effect intrudes into the panel area by up to a couple or three inches. Altogether it probably affects something like 10% of the total screen area. I consider it unacceptable for a monitor with the price tag the 2001FP carries. It is really UGLY and visually distractin when the screen is black. Of course, I'd hate to get a replacement with nice uniform backlighting, but noticeably dead pixels....
Also, I remember reading somewhere in on of these forums that 5 dead pixels is considered sufficient for rejection ... or maybe it was a MAX of 5 is considered acceptable. In either case, IMO you've probably got grounds for asking for a replacement, especially considering dead pixels AND non-uniform backlighting.

I ran the PIXEL test on mine and it did not show any dead pixels. This was the response from customer support in which I will be sending mine back for replacement. I am also trying to have one sent to me prior to sending this one back.
Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support.
I would like to request you please perform some troubleshooting steps in order to check the monitor.
Does Dell have a Quality Assurance section ? and if not Why the heck not ? Why can't these monitors be tested before they are shipped ? It only took about 10 minutes of run time before I saw my screen bleeding problem and it doesn't even need a computer connection to be seen. Here's a hint Dell - a little QA will go a long way to providing your customers a reason to come back to Dell for their next purchase. Unfortunatly, you've already lost a lot of us.
I agree completely. The backlight bleeding problem on mine can be clearly seen without ANY computer connected by simply turning the monitor on!
And don't get me started on QA, or I'll start hyperventilating about Dell selling me "the ultimate gaming rig" complete with ATI drivers that crash the machine when you game on it (go see the Dimension/Video forum threads on this). Dell's fault? ATI's fault? New technology fault (PCI-Express, X800XT, mobo, chipset drivers....)? Who knows, and I'm sure it'll all get sorted out between updated BIOS, drivers, etc., but the point is: DELL ISN'T ADEQUATELY TESTING WHAT THEY'RE SELLING BEFORE KICKING IT OUT THE DOOR!
Dell is shipping me a replacement and sending me an airbill to send back the defective monitor after receieving the replacement. Let's hope the New One does not have dead PIXELS or Ghosting (bleeding) problems like this one does.
hello, i bought two of these monitors last week from dell, i currently as well own 2 of viewsonics vx2000 and couple samsungs 20" as well....i run my systems in dual-screen mode....
i have the problem of severe bleed of light in leftside lower and upperside right as well, plus im getting some pixels going green in random spots onscreen (not dead pixels, but they just turn green for awhile)
i am wondering the shortest way to get this back to dell for a working exchange as you did, whats the best route, calling or online support form somewhere?
i want to buy a second dell 2001fp as soon as this one is stable, never seen such lightbleed on an lcd since the passive screens of the mid-90s so i hope it isnt in all 2001fps but it couldnt be because i dont think anyone whos seens an lcd before would be able to work with it......thanks for your input!
