Monitor screen goes blank.

I have a dimension 4600 with a 15" flat panal monitor (E151fPb). Have had the system for over a year. Recently the monitor will suddenly go blank (grey) during use in which I have to cycle the power to the system to keep using it. Have tried swapping to an older gateway monitor but it still happens (although not as frequently). Have also swapped power cords to the monitor.

Don't know if this helps but I have looked at the diagnostic lights on the back of the tower after the monitor goes blank and they are all green.

Any ideas?

    jzkcarroll,

Your problem does not seem to be with the monitor.  Since you have changed monitors and the problem continues, it seems that your computer tower has a problem.  Does your computer use the integrated video connector or does it use the video card connector?  Click here to view the setup diagram for your system.

    jzkcarroll,

Does this happen to you if you are using a particular program?

Do you have any power management features set to turn off the monitor if it is not in use for a time?

Is your system still under warranty with Dell?

    Steve,

It doesn't appear to happen while running a particular program because it has happened while on-line as well as using word while not being on-line.

I checked the power option properties in the control panel and the monitor was set to turn off after 20 minutes. I set it to "never". ( I remember the monitor going blank before i was on for 20 minutes).

Unfortunately my warranty with dell expired after 1 year.

    jzkcarroll,

Your symptom points to a failing video card.  It is fortunate that your system has the facility to install an AGP video card.  You can purchase an inexpensive AGP video card at a local computer store and install it into your computer.  After installing it, you may need to restart the computer and to into system setup using the key to change the video priority under Integrated Devices (Legacy Select Options).
You will also need to uninstall the video card driver for the onboard (integrated) video card.  You can do this by simply removing the display adapter from Device Manager.  You will then need to install the driver for the replacement video card.
