P992 too bright
I have a P992 that I have been very pleased with. But in recent months, I've had to reduce the brightness several times and now it's on zero and is still a bit too bright. It's not bad now, but since this appears to be a trend I need to find a way to fix it. It certainly can't be good for the monitor!
I searched this forum and found several threads describing this problem, but no solutions. The P991 apparently had the same problem... lots of posts on that, but no one from DELL (or anyone else for that matter) ever posts a solution (well, except for one... see below).
There's this one setting on the OSD that I don't understand. Rather than experimenting, I thought I'd ask for advice:
Color Mode:
Preset (current selection)
Variable
Expert
sRGB
Might it be possible to compensate for brightness by adjusting the Color Mode? I agree this doesn't make much sense, but someone reported in this forum that the "Color Return" setting on the P991 fixed this same problem. Unfortunately, the P992 doesn't seem to have this option. :-(
Otherwise, is there an internal pot for brightness?

I backed the contrast off a bit the other day, but the screen begins to appear washed out. Actually, my screen is only marginally overbright but I had to reduce the brightness to zero to achieve this. So there's defininitely something going on with the brightness circuit and it's happened gradually over the past few months (the monitor is three years old). Rather than continuning to compensate, I'd like to find out what's at the root of the problem and try to address it, if possible.
For example, if a resistor is drifting out of spec, an adjustment to an internal pot (if there is one) could provide a long-term (if not permanent) fix. As for the color adjustments, I wouldn't think these settings would impact brightness, at least not directly. The only reason I brought it up is becuase of the report by a P991 owner that adjusting "color return" fixed his brightness problem.
Since this seems to be a relatively common problem with these monitors, I'm hoping someone has isolated the problem by now.Message Edited by ginahoy on 07-26-2005 03:09 PM

It is a shame to junk these monitors over this issue of drifting G2 voltage. But repair is uneconomic, the Windas route is complicated and I would prefer to avoid internal repairs.
PLEASE, PLEASE can someone supply information on how to access the full SERVICE MENU on this model, where I should be able to reduce the G2 voltage.
