We are using a Dell XPS410 with Windows Vista Home Premium and a Dell XPS 710 with Windows Vista Home Premium. We connect to internet via DSL and Netgear router without any problems EXCEPT since about two week we can no longer access a certain website (195.71.11.67) which we had used for years. Other people can still access the site with no problem. The site is not protected. We have tried the usual: disconnect the firewall, checked the internet security sites (trusted etc), we tried to 'Ping - not result, we tried a 30 Hop test - all timed out.
The usual error message tells us that "The connection was reset" or "The server timed out" or words to that effect. The results are the same with Internet Explorer or with Mozilla Firefox. We have no problem accessing any other sites that we normally use. Calls to AT&T our ISP and to Dell were a waste of time, both recommended that we utilize their "fee for service" offers. Any ideas anyone?
Try updating your wireless adapter drivers on all machines and update the firmware(see below)on your router. Follow the update instructions that are provided at each link?
I have updated the router. The Speedstream 5100 modem is no longer available and there are no firmware updates. The wireless router for the Dell XPS7100 is up to date.
My attempts to ping that site (spiegel.de) still time out. I have not installed any new hardware, software, had no crashes, no viruses etc., have not tinkered with the size of the packets - nothing.
I have an older modem - Zyxel Prestige 645 - but I am reluctant to try it. Any further ideas?
Sorry. I have one desktop (XPS410) with a Speedstream 5100 modem and a Netgear router. Further I have a laptop XPS 7100 which I use to access the internet via the router when I am away from my desk.
Yes, I can hook up the desktop to the DSL via the Speedstream modem.
Okay, bypassing the router, connect one of your computers directly to the modem via ethernet cable. Power cycle your network:
1) Power everything off. (cable/DSL modem, router, computers, etc.)
2) Wait 5 minutes...
3) Power on cable/DSL modem, wait 1-2 minutes...
4) Power on remaining computers or components.
5) Check for network and Internet connection.
Check to see if you can now access the website? This will at least check to see if the problem is located within your router, or not.
