Dell Wireless 1390 Not Functioning

Greetings, Just finished 'downgrading' my Inspiron 1521 to XP. Thanks to this board I was able to find all the right device drivers for XP. The only thing that is not functioning right is the Wireless card. I'm using the Dell Wireless LAN card utility. I'm able to scan for networks and see networks in range. I've setup my network as a preferred network, but it will not connect. I've checked the switch on the side, the wifi 'light' is on. I can't tell what is causing the problem. Any suggestsions? Thanks in advance for your help. Matt

Ah, interesting. I connected to a 'neighbor' that was not secured and it worked. I'll have to check my security settings again. I could have sworn I entered my WEP keys correctly. Thanks.

if possible, you might try connecting to an unsecured public network somewhere ...  just to confirm that the card is working.

alternatively, you might try (just to test) with no security on your current network.

if all your hardware supports WPA (which all but the oldest stuff does), you might give that a try.  It's a lot harder to mess up a passphrase (just make it long and random to avoid dictionary based attacks).

also, make sure mac filtering isn't enabled on your router.

Actually, I take that back. I'm not able to connect to anything. I tried reinstalling the Dell Wireless LAN 1390 drivers only to get this wonderful error message: Error "Update 412" has occurred and Setup cannot continue. I've searched for that error all over, can't find anything. Does anyone have any idea what the Update 412 error is? Thanks. Matt

i typically just install the drivers and not the whole package.  you can try uninstalling everything from control panel (if there is anything) including the dell utility.  you can use a program like 7-zip (it's free) to open up the setup package and extract the drivers folder.  you can then manually update the driver for the card (via device manager) by pointing to the extracted folder.

OK, no luck on reinstalling the drivers. Here is what I've done so far. Uninstalled all Dell Utilities such as QuickSet and the Dell Wireless Utility. Tried Updating the driver, by doing to Control Panel > Computer Management > Services > Device Manager Update Driver. Still no go, when I click on "Connect To" and it brings up the WindowsXP Wireless networking window, no networks are shown in the area. Before my 'downgrade' to WinXP this was working under Vista and it would show at least 6 networks in the area. So I removed the wireless LAN card from the laptop, found the chip model number: BCM94311MCG I went to the internet and downloaded the latest drivers from Broadcom: http://www.x-drivers.com/component/option,com_remository/func,select/id,3209/ I used the latest version v.4.150.22.0 which is 'newer' than the Dell version 4.100.15.5. Unfortunately this driver wouldn't load at all. So I'm at a loss as what to do, are there any other utilities, log error files, or something I can look at to see what's going on? Thanks. Matt

OK GOT IT!!  Chalk one up for Dell Tech Support, thank you for finding this little 'nugget'.

When the Dell 1390 drivers are installed on Windows XP, there are a few settings you need to adjust in the driver.

Goto:  Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management
Click on Devices and find the Dell 1390 card under Networking.
    Right click and select Properties
On the 'advanced' tab there is a listing of properties to the right.
Check that "Bluetooth Collaboration" is disabled *
Chekc that "Roaming" is set to Aggressive

Setting these two values I was able to see networks in my area and connect.

    * The Dell1390 card I have does not come with Bluetooth

To anyone that has run into this problem, hope this helps.
