Ethernet cable

I am trying to set up Adelphia internet on my Dell DImension 3000. However when I connect the ethernet cable it reads as unconnected. Also when I look at where it is plugged in, it is not lit. There is only 1 area to plug in the cable and I know the cable works because it connects my room mates computer to the internet just fine. I am easily frustrated with computers and not schooled in the language, so please explain as simplistically as possible, thanks.

Right click on the icon for My Computer and select Properties from the drop-down menu.  In the Windows that opens, click on the Hardware tab then on the Device Manager button.  Click the + sign next to Network Adapters.   Tell me what is listed there.

It says Intel(R)Pro/100 VE Network Connection, also there is an icon of what looks like a green battery but it has a red 'x' over it.

You need to be more specific. Exactly where is this "icon of what looks like a green battery but it has a red 'x' over it"?

The symbol meant that I had disabled my LAN connection, so I reconnected it, and now the lights where I plug in the ethernet cable are green. However it is still not connecting me to the internet.

    Thanks,
    Sam

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

    Hi there.

Looks like you have a faulty ethernet cable.

Try updating your drivers through manufacturers website or try getting some new updated ethernet cable.
