TCPMON.ini corruption

I had to replace my hard drive that came with the XPS 1640 which is running Windows Vista Home Premium. I re-installed my laptop with the recovery disk that I made after receiving the laptop in 2010. Then other issues arised and had to format my computer. I used the other way of installing the software and drivers provided. Things were fine until my hard drive died.

I started the regular install of Windows and drivers provided to me. Things did not appear to look the same. Tried to update my Windows Vista (which were 119 updates) and was unable to download one and messed up the computer. I noticed that my cd/dvd ROM eject button was not functional. Reformated the hard drive again and decided to use the recovery disk to load the computer. Everything seemed to be working fine except for unable to update Vista or even access Microsoft.com unless I use Google Chrome. BTW, my cd/dvd ROM is working under this installation.

I did try to do a hardware diagnostic and was unable to do a complete diagnostic on the cd/dvd player. It thinks that it has media in it and or tray is open, which does not and does not appear to be open. Could this be causing the file corruption?

Can you please help me get this corrected so I can proceed with the updates before they are no longer available. I did try my OS disk to fix repair, but don't think my disk is any good since I had issues with it when I installed it the first 3 times.

    cw95,

When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the Dell System Software (if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Start with the Dell System Software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

I have tried both ways...OS then drivers provided by Dell (that was the first 3 installs) and was able to download the Vista updates. It did not download one of the files and gave me a blue screen stating an issue with the system. It went by too fast to be able to read the whole thing.

That is when I decided to load my laptop with the recovery disk. A backup that I put on a disk was created in 2010 after receiving the laptop. I missed all the other Dell programs.

I had to do a clean install of my system due to having virus and registry issues about a year ago. It was with the OS disk followed by the dell driver disk. It ran fine until my hard drive died.

When I re-installed onto this new HD purchased from dell, using the OS followed by dell driver cd, it was more of a challenge than the last time I installed my computer. My cd/dvd player was not working properly (button on top of keyboard wasn't ejecting the cd/dvd when prompted: maybe that is where the keyboard driver comes in) and video graphics were not acknowledged. I kinda thought if I used my recovery disk, things would be easier. UUUgggggg, computers!

BTW..someone told me that I am going to have to replace my network card. Not too sure of that. I was thinking maybe my cd/dvd player is not reading all the data that is needed to download. I don't know. Sorry, at a loss here. Not use to having this much troubleshooting issues.

Well, my only option was to get another OS and driver disk from Dell, which was a lil bit of a challenge to get via FedEx. Re installed the system with the new disks and everything has been downloading fine. I had read somewhere on the internet to try to get a new disk to install the system programs. I have ran a couple of scans for any corruptions and all is good so far. YAY! The windows updates are very time consuming yet worth it.
