When you say balanced channel per channel, you mean you can't just have 1 1GB stick  in one channel for CPU A, and then 1 1GB stick in the same channel for CPU B?  There would have to be an additional 1GB stick for each channel?  (it is a dual processor R610).
I guess I'm confused why we cannot use 2 of the 1GB sticks?  No biggy, just curious.

With memory population rules there are some things we will need to confirm. First is to verify that they are of the same type, as you can't have both RDIMMs and UDIMMs in the system. Your original DIMMs may be of the UDIMM type.  

Also ensure that you are using Optimized Mode with this type of configuration.  Change the mode with your F2 System Setup under the Memory section.

For a single processor configuration, you will be using only A1/A4, and A2/A5. The two 16 GB DIMMs will be in A1/A2 (white tabs), and the two 1 GB DIMMs will be in A4/A5 (black tabs).

If you have dual processors, you can install the two 16 GB DIMMs in A1/B1 (white tabs) followed by the two 1GB DIMMS in A4/B4 (black tabs).

The system will not allow you use all your 1 GB DIMMs, since it has to be balanced channel per channel.  Thus you will need to leave two of the 1 GB DIMMs out.

Let me know how that works out. 

Assuming you don't have a any UDIMMs (as the R610 doesn't support 8GB UDIMMs, so I'll assume they are RDIMM and that the 2GB DIMMs are as well):

On the R610, each CPU has 3 memory channels. They all have to have the exact same DIMM layout, or they need to be blank.

So, with 4 2GB dimms and 2 8GB dimms, at best you can do:

CPU A:

Memory channel 1: 8GB + 2GB

Memory channel 2: no dimms

Memory channel 3: no dimms

CPU B:

Memory channel 1: 8GB + 2GB

Memory channel 2: no dimms

Memory channel 3: no dimms

You'll want to check the manual or the sticker on the cover of the server to see which exact dimmslots make up channel 1 for each CPU.

That is correct.  Here is a visual of what you can do with the DIMMs that you currently have.  You can see that CPU A - Ch 1 is balanced with CPU B - Ch 1.  There is no way insert the other 1 GB DIMMs without throwing off the balance, such that the other channels will no longer match that of channel 1. The other channels must remain blank in that case. Your expandable options are to either buy an addition pair of 16 GB DIMMs to continue matching what you have, or forego the 1 GB mix altogether and move forward with all 16 GB's DIMMs for ease of population.
