Why and how do I frequently lose commands I've placed into my toolbars? I'm sure it's something I'm doing inadvertantly, but for the life of me I can't figure out what. I go into TOOLBARS, go to CUSTOMIZE, go to COMMANDS, and ever so carefully bring up commands I want in the toolbars. Then a few days or a few weeks later, I turn on the computer, and many of those specially-placed commands are missing! I've been having this problem for 4 years now! It happened with our old desktop--Windows 98, Word ????, then with a new desktop and Word 2005, and now with my Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP and Word 2002, I think it is. WORD is the one program I can't do without. I use it more than anything else. In fact, my laptop is NOT even connected to the Internet. I have it strictly as a word processor. So I know the problems I'm having aren't virus or worm or otherwise-internet related. ANY SUGGESTIONS/THOUGHTS/IDEAS--ANYONE? Thanks a bunch if you do.
Seems like you're having a problem with Word's normal template. First, clean your temp folder. Start, Run, type
%temp%
and click OK. Delete as many of the files as possible.
Next, do a search for Word temp files. Start, Search, type
~*.*
choose More Advance Options, Check to search hidden files and folders, and click Search. Delete all files found.
Next empty your Internet Explorer cache. Start, Control Panel, Internet Options. Click the Delete Files and Delete History buttons.
Also, are you ever prompted to save the normal template when exiting Word? You may want to defragment your hard drive, and run a chkdsk. To defragment, Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. Disk Defragmenter. To run a chkdsk, My Computer, right click your C: drive icon and choose Properties. Select the Tools tab, click the Check Now button, place a check mark in both options. You will have to restart your PC to finish this.
Thank you very much for all your detailed advice on toolbars. Unfortunately, much of it is over my head. I don't know what a temp file is, and yes, I do get the prompt to save in Normal Template--and I don't know what that is either. In theory I "kinda" do, but in actual practice it's just one of those THINGS that I don't know how to get to or change or modify. And I don't understood when I should or shouldn't.
Also, no defrag necessary--I've done it and there's no need. My computer is quite new, I have 8 or 9 word documents on it, the programs installed at the factory, and that's about it. I'm not online with it and have never had it connected to the internet. After the last time I customized my toolbars, though, they seem to be hanging in there. If they go kaflooey again, I will get one of our local gurus up here to follow your instructions.
