Programs randomly shutting down

I am so frustrated with Dell support and I have only had the computer 6 weeks!!  My computer keeps shutting programs down randomly.  There is no warning the program just says it is not responding and to report the problem to Microsoft and poof….everything is gone! I called tech support 3 times.  The results we did a hard drive check, it was okay, rebooted the whole system which didn’t help and I got hung up on at about 1:00 am this morning.  Today I took the CPU into work and our IT person checked my system for viruses and ad ware.  The computer was clear of both.  I am at my wits end.  She also checked my hard drive for error messages and only found a couple of keyboard errors and some print/scanner errors.  I didn’t even know you could do this (tech support  never had me check any sort of error log).

Also does anyone know if all Dell’s tech support is outsourced?  I would really like to talk to someone w/o an Indian/Pakistani accent.  I am hard of hearing and sometimes it is very difficult to make out what they are saying to me.

BTW my computer is a Dimension 3000 with Windows XP Home.

My suggestion would be to e-mail tech support. It takes a little longer initially, but they'll make the effort to really try to understand the problem.

My second suggestion is to keep a log (by hand, that is) of what programs are shutting down, under what circumstances, and the EXACT error message(s) you are getting (something a little more specific than "not responding"). Based on what you've posted, it's impossible to tell whether the problem is hardware, OS, application, or what.

When you say you "rebooted the whole system", what exactly did you do? Just turn it off and back on (this is what rebooting refers to)? Or did you re-load the entire OS?
