What this is, is the common name toolbar. It is one of many tool bars that can be installed as a means to "enhance" your browser experience, but is in itself spyware.

On common names website, there are ways to turn it off and get rid of it. You can follow this here:

Also, you may want to go download AdAware or Spybot Search & Destroy. Both of these programs will rid yourself of this type of spyware. I would recommended the AdAware or other program first, before looking into common name's help.

I saw an error message like this a few weeks back. What was the name of the tech support gentleman that helped you?

Well, It didnt work!  UGH!!!  Adaware or the common name tool bar....the last thing I have time for is to sit on the phone on hold for nearly an hour again...

 

Any other ideas??? Please????

Unfortunately the Adaware did not fix the problem....I will try the commonname deal now....UGH!

Take if from me. Do some research on how to remove this issue from the machine. If you call them, they're just gonna have you clear the startups, and that's it. It's not an issue with a Dell product and was not installed on the machine from the factory. I have experienced this common name issue before and one of the spyware removal sites was generous enough to help me remove it.

If you call they're most likely going to have you reinstall your complete operating system.

That common name link will only work if the common name is still installed. It may not still be installed on the machine, or it may be a file that is left from an incomplete uninstall of the software. Common name does not recommend uninstalling it at all.

Did ya give the Spybot Search & Destroy a try? It gets a bit deeper than AdAware from time to time. It's available from free download from download.com.

Thanks....this is getting old......so much for the infamous Dell support...

Note you are not communicating with Dell Tech Support.  Further, who are you trying to blame for allowing garbage like this to get downloaded to your computer.  It is not our fault nor is it Dell's.   Did you try going through the HijackThis routine as suggested in the link I provided above?

Easy now Volcano11....I know you are not Dell, nor was I blaming anyone on this forum for the problems we are experiencing, or even Dell for that matter. My point was simply, when we pay a considerable amount of money for a computer and the support that goes along with it- it would be nice if the support end lived up to the $$$ end. Whose fault is it the garbage is on our computer? Well, unfortunately as we all know, just by going to certain websites, we end up picking up "junk" without even knowing it. So is it Dell's fault? of course not. Is the lackluster support their fault, of course it is. They MUST know that people everywhere get this garbage on their computer and they MUST expect calls for help. That is why they have 24 hours support lines right? Well, if that is the case, then the quick and easy msconfig isnt the answer, although it does get us off the phone really fast....that was my point. Please do not take it personnally, I truly appreciate your support along with everyone else who has chimed in...
