I am looking for a Network Management Solution that monitors my network and servers between 3 data center locations.
We primarily have Dell Servers and would like to know hardware issues (Failed Drives, Failed Fans etc) and let us know what servers are in warranty and what servers are not. Or a way to pull a server warranty report.
I also need/want something that can alert me if a service is not running (Ex. Exchange Services) or if there are dings in each server’s event viewer. So I can proactively resolve issues before they get out of hand.
We have been doing (some/partial) monitoring with Dell Management Console via SNMP but I don’t think it is working like it should be. I am reading that if you install an agent, agents will give you so much more info. What exactly is the benefit that an Agent Client vs SNMP?
We are currently using SolarWinds for Network Monitoring but I’m not seeing an easy, intuitive way to utilize it. We are thinking about MS SCCM-SCOM for Server Monitoring and reporting but that will require an Agent to be installed (if I am reading correctly).
We have a mix of server brands and many VMWare VMs in our environment.
Any recommendations/pointers to a direction would be greatly helpful!
I've been using SCOM for the past couple of years and it does a pretty good job.
It does require a fair bit of effort to come up to speed though and maintenance is high also, but it will do what you want.
The agent allows custom scripts to be run against the boxes.
The UNIX/Linux guys swear by Nagios as the supreme monitoring s/ware (and it's free) but you need to be good at scripting in Russian to do well with it.
