Trojan problem, possible Smitfraud

Hi, all. I am getting error messages warning that my "virtual memory is insufficient" and the like. The computer runs very slowly, and sometimes refuses to do anything at all, and I have to crash and restart. I have run Adaware SE, found nothing. I also ran Spybot, which found four entries of "Smitfraud c-888."  Spybot says it cannot remove this, and thusfar it has not been able to.  McAfee found nothing.  My Hijack This log follows. Any help would be appreciated!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

    * Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    * Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    * Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    * You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
    click YES
    * Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
    Vundo.
    * When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer,
    click OK.
    * Turn your computer back on.
    * Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new
    HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not
    remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button."
    when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hi, 1972vet.  Thanks for your response.  I downloaded and ran Vundofix, twice. Each time, it found nothing, so there is no log from it that I can post. Should I repost a new Hijack this ?

OK, let's see if we can remove these orphaned Registry entries...some of which are from your Vundo infection. This will clean up your log a bit.

Your log shows that you have the PopCapLoader Object installed.
As long as you play the online games (most are fine by the way) you will be bothered on occasion by adware. The PopCap loader object will trigger an alert from a Trend Micro scan.

Trend Micro has labeled this software as "spyware/grayware". If you remove it, you will just have to reinstall it the next time you want to play the online games.

Your Java application is out of date and causes a slight security risk as a result.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components

    1. Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web
    browser.

    2. Click Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.
For those just reading this thread:
Depending on your OS, you may have to click Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs.

    3. Click once on any item listing Java Runtime Environment in the name (to highlight it) then click the "Remove" or "Change/Remove" button.
Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read each entry in the list.
Repeat step 3 as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
**If you are asked to reboot at any point during the uninstallations, please do so. Then go back to Add/Remove and continue with the rest of the removals...when finished uninstalling all of them, reboot the computer.

    4. Navigate to and delete:
    • C:\Program Files\ Java =this folder if found
    5. Then go to this page.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications"and click the "Download" button to the right.

    6. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement" the page will refresh and click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language. Save it to your desktop.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please run HijackThis again and check the following:

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Do you still get the "Smitfraud c-888" entries when you run Spybot?

Hi 1972vet; In answer to your question, no, the Smitfraud no longer shows up on the spybot check. The computer is still behaving badly, though. I have a true newby question -- I run windows XP, four users. Should I be doing a Hijack this for each of the four user accounts?

Run HijackThis again and check these:

    O16 - DPF: RaptisoftGameLoader - http://www.miniclips.com/hamsterball/raptisoftgameloader.cab

Close all windows except for HijackThis then click "Fix Checked".

Download and scan with AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5
( This is Ewido 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
    • After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
    • Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
    • Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
    • Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
    • After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
    • The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
    • Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
    • Press "OK".
    • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
    • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
    • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
    • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
    • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
    • Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on the " Scanner" button and choose the " Settings" tab.
    • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
    • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
    • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
    • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

Close the application and reboot the computer into Safe mode. Once in safe mode continue with the instructions below:

Open the AVG Anti-Spyware application and click the " Scan" tab.
Click " Complete System Scan" to start.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If AVG Anti-Spyware "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
    • Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.
    • If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.
When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click " Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate " No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

Click on " Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select " Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\

Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done and reboot back to your normal user mode. Don't forget to submit the log report in your next response along with a fresh hijackthis log. Are the other users accounts experiencing any problems?

Your log looks clean now. How's it running?

Run the AVG Antispyware application for each user. As well, please perform this online scan...for each user: F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta
    1. Click on the link " F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta".
    2. You may receive an alert on the address bar at this point to install the ActiveX control.
    3. Click on that alert and then Click Insall ActiveX component.
    4. Read the license agreement and click " Accept".
5.Click " Custom Scan" and be sure the following are checked:
    • Scan whole System
    • Scan all files
    • Scan whole system for rootkits
    • Scan whole system for spyware
    • Scan inside archives
    • Use advanced heuristics
    6. When the scan completes, click the " I want to decide item by item" button.
    7. For each item found, Select " Disinfect" and click " Next".
    8. When done, click the " Show Report" button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply along with the scan logs from the AVG Anti-Spyware and a HijackThis log for each user. Label each user #1, #2 etc. so you can keep track of any further instructions that may be necessary. If needed, I will post instructions for each user by the number you assign for the logs. Thanks!

Hi 1972vet. Deleted the entries on Hijack this as instructed, and ran the AVG Anti-spyware. I haven't really had time to see if the problem is solved, but things appear a bit better already. I am posting the AVG report, followed by the Hijack this report. Again, many thanks for your help!
Also, in answer to your question -- the other users have had problems as well.

Hi 1972vet,  I attempted to run the f-secure scanner twice without success. The computer seemed to be running prettyt well, then I downloaded the f-secure and followed the protocol. The first time, it ran for a while then I got an error message warning that virtual memory was low, which is the sma emessage that I got when things were running badly. It hung up shortly after, and I had to close out of it. I noticed that it had found three viruses, but could get no details. I tried running again later inthe day. This time, two hours passed, then it gave a "runtime error -- program C:\program files\msn\msn core files.msn.exe. abnormal program termination." Again, it seemed to have found three viruses, but it had to shut down. I next ran AVG again, which found some tracking cookies and nothing else. After all of this, the computer is back to running badly, with the virtual memory error coming up a lot.  The avg and hijack logs follow:
