Right click the icon for your hard drive in My Computer, and select Properties.  Go to the Tools tab there, click on the Error Checking button, check both boxes ( "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" ) and press the Start button below.  You'll get a prompt stating that the Checkdisk can't be performed while Windows is in use, and asking you if you want to perform same the next time you reboot.  Answer yes and then reboor the system, and the process should begin at that point.  Depending on the size of your drive and condition of same, the process may take some time - just let it finish, and it'll take to to Windows (or the Welcome screen) when it's finished.

ok i tryed to do the chkdsk utility it worked on my f drive but when i tryed doing my c drive it always says  The disk check could not be performed because the disk utility needs exclusive acces to some windows files on disk. These files can be accessed only by restarting windows.  Well i restarted windows at lease 4 time and i get the same messegae when  i try the chdsk utility.

You missed the question Do you want to run checkdisk on reboot? You must answer Yes to this question, press enter, then reboot and don't touch the keyboard when it reboots. If you press any key, you'll cancel the scan.

I am having the EXACT same problem as Phil. Mine started with an aolload.exe - Corrupt File message which keeps popping up. So AOL said to uninstall AOL and then do this stuff. Running Chkdsk utility. When I put it in to run it does nothing visible, even at restart.  It also says I have to be the administrator and I AM. This is getting frustrating. Is there another way?
