Data Transfer
Good Evening Forum,
I have a Deminsion 4400 series Computer that I wish to give to my son. It has a HP CD/DVD burner that I have burned Many Cd's but never and DVD's. As I now wish to back up my important data before handing over my (baby) 4400 computer, I have now realized that the HP DVD burner simply does NOT burn any DVd's. I contacted HP and they told me to do the un-install and re-install. This gave me a wierd error message that They (HP) told me was a problem with my chip set.????? Contacted the Chip set processor pople and they offered NO help... I have tried a variety of different DVd's from Fuji to Sony and I still receive a multiple of different errors when I attempt to burn the DVD. As a side note: The chipset error was NOT a problem when I first installed the drive. Anyway, I gave up on the burner But was wondering, and this may be the Most Profoundly Dumb question of the Month, BUT I was hoping I could connect my Dell 4400 computer with my new XPS400 computer by say a USB cable and transfer the data to the new computer???? Both computers are almost side by side so the connection would NOT be a problem.. And both are runnign Windows XP. However I wanted to ask the 'Pros' on the Dell forum if this maneuver is a viable option!!!! I DO apologise for being so long winded... But I have not come across this type of problem ever and have not seen this listed on the forum... I Thank You ALL for your Time and attention and any information you may have on my behalf... I am not exactly sure what a Lan port is. Both computers do have an ethernet connection and how would I go about using a 'crossover'.. (I DO apologize for my lack of experience in this area.. My first computer, the one I wish to give to my son, has my router connected to it's ethernet port. The other computer has a wireless remote tower simply connected to a USB port. Funny but I always thought I might be able to just communicate to each computer by using the wireless router and the wireless 'satellite towers. My third Dell, Dimension 4600, is also connected to the internet in this same manner... Any further advice would be greatly... Thanks again for the very fast response.... Art Caldwell :smileysad:

if I understand you post then provided the router has a wireless component then you should be able to transfer your files over without needing anything else.
if you have alot of stuff then transfer wireless can be slow while a crossover ethernet cable will be much faster.
you will temporarily have to make a network by enabling file and printer sharing on both pcs plus the workgroup on both must have the same name.
if you have firewalls on the pc then it will probably be simplier to just temporarily disable them whilst you transfer stuff across instead of configuring permissions for them being in the trusted zone.

it should be cheaper and faster at data transfer than an usb network cable.
