HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N driver

All,

I am having some trouble with the DVD drive on my laptop.  When playing, (any), DVD's my laptop freezes and then "blue-screens".  The blue-screen states that it could be either a hardware fault or a driver error.

To remidy this I have been trying to find a driver update for the HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N supplied with my laptop.  The Dell driver download section does not hold the correct driver, (GCC 4241 but no 4240), and I have been unable to find a driver update on the net, (found lots of firmware updates that don't do anything!).

Can anyone point me in the direction of the nearest driver update please?

Cheers!

The problem would be with your DVD software and not drivers. What are you using to play DVDs??? Have you tried several DVDs??? Use WinDVD. There's a WinDVD patch for XP as well

Cheers for the reply SabreTooth.

I have tried loads of DVD's and they all fall over in the same spectacular manner.  I am using WinDVD on XP, and have been for about a year without problems.  This issue only started over the weekend.....

  • Flash the BIOS using the HDD version from the Dell Downloads section at support.dell.com
  • Once this is done, download and install the Video drivers
  • Download and install DirectX 9 from the internet
  • If still nogo, reinstall WinDVD
  • If still nogo, and the issue is only with DVDs,backup data & reinstall the OS
