Quieter power supply ?

Hi,

I just recently got  a new Dimension E520 and the power supply has a kind of annoying noise .. not too bad, but I would like something more quiet.  Can I replace the power supply for a quiter one ? Any specs on the noise levels ?

thanks.

I have yet to own a Dell with a noisy power supply. I presume you are talking about the fan in the PSU. You might contact Dell about a replacement unless you are trying to find something very nearly silent because you are very sensitive.

I wouldn't say it's loud, it's more the frequency that bothers me, especaily as it is continuous.  And yes I presume it is the PSU fan, all I know is if I open the case it is coming from the PSU

It is also possible come component is vibrating that normally wouldn't. For example, the switching power supply for my DSL modem would "whine". Not very loud and if I pressed on the plastic case it would stop. I bought another modem and PSU at a thrift shop and sure enough, the new one was quiet. The original was driving me nuts.

I would contact Dell about getting a replacement PSU. You shouldn't have to go crazy.

Peter is correct because the E521 P/S is as quiet as they get. I changed the P/S in my E521 to a Seasonic M12, 500W and I do believe it is actually more quiet. Like Peter said contact Dell and tell them you want a new P/S. You should have no problem.
