boot failure with page fault error help

I think I may have some bad memory.  I checked the cmos setup and it had only one memory chip listed so I opened up and removed the battery and memory cards then reinstalled them.  On boot I entered cmos F2 and memory showed 2 256 cards so I went to maintence and set factory defaults and reset the time then exited and saved.  Windows XP started it's boot but 3/4 the way through I got a blue halt screen giving a page fault error and showing a memory location and a shut down.
I swapped memory slots but got a freeze at the dell logo screen.  I swapped it back and computer again froze on boot.

At this point I don't know what to do to further trouble shoot.  Any help will be appreciated

Thanks for your help.  I have a Dell Diminsion 8400 and it has a utility partition so I will try booting to that and run diagnostics.  The computer has 2 512 DDR2 SRaM   Can I remove one and see if that resolves the problem?  If so I would just order a couple of 1 GB memory chips.
Thanks again

Run the extended tests when given the choice.

If you have the budget, I would buy a fresh pair of memory modules.

Yes you can remove one module and re-run the memory test, to find the bad one.

Thanks again for your help.  I ran the memory test and it failed on MATS and on March A
The failure on MATS was 2F00:0119   where it read 0004000h and expected 00000000h at channel B Dim 0.  The same code appeared for lots more addresses.  The MARCH A error code was at 97% as 2f00:0419 and gave one of the same addresses on channel B Dim 0.  The slot stress  tested as OK

Which chip is Channel B Dim 0?   When I look at the manual I see slots 1,2,3,4 where 1 and 2 have white tabs and 3 and 4 have black tabs.  Can I remove the chip in slot 2 and see what happens?

Do I just need to buy some new memory?  Do I need to do any more testing?

Thank u for the link  I see the 2 Gig is about half of what Dell has to offer.  I can use the extra money to buy a small air conditioner for my little office :smileyvery-happy:   I do see chips for the Dimension 8400 series and the 8400 media?????   I don't know what this means.  Is there any problem with using chips that are not Dell?  like something omitted?

"Is there any problem with using chips that are not Dell"

That is why I posted the crucial link, they guarantee compatibility with your system.

I think the probability of resulting error or other problems is higher if we choose to use chips that are not Dell.

I think Dell is a little pricey. Memory from Crucial.com and some other sellers are gaunteed to work with Dell systems or they take it back. I don't advocate trying to use cheap RAM but why spend more than you need to?
