2408WFP blackouts out briefly
Had an 2408wfp, firmware A01, for about 3 weeks now. Every once in awhile it blacks out for a second before the picture comes back. When it comes back up I get the little DVI icon in the upper left of the screen as if the signal was briefly interrupted. It doesn't happen often, once every few days, but this morning it did it 4 times in about 10 seconds.
I have reconnected the DVI cable, and after this mornings problems I switched to the other DVI port on my video card. Since I can't recreate the problem I don't know if that fixed it or not. Since it doesn't happen often, troublshooting is very difficult.
This problem did not happen on my old monitor. I do not have another DVI cable to try. I am running Vista 32, monitor hooked up to DVI. Latest drivers installed on my EVGA 8800GTS (happened with older drivers too), and using Dells driver for the 2408wfp. I don't think the video card is the problem because Vista gives an error message if the video card isnt sending a signal.

We are seeing alot of issues with docks (which we do not test). Test it directly connected to a PC.

My story: I have two 2408WFPs, revision A01, mfg date November 2008. Same problems everyone else here is reporting: Won't come out of sleep: icon in upper left corner appears, power button changes color as if waking up but then shows 'entering power save' banner and goes back to sleep. Blinks while in use - as if backlight is going off and on. Power button doesn't change color, no input icon and no power save banner, just quick blinking for a few seconds while in use. I filed a warranty claim on these in February of 2009. I expected to get replacements that were new and in good working order, free of the problem behavior I had been seeing. What I got were 'refurbished' displays that were, if anything, worse than the originals.
I sent the refurbs back and tried to figure out if there was a software problem causing this: this is a Linux machine, so new nVidia drivers, etc. Then I found this forum and saw all the people with Windows boxes having the same problems with these displays. Don't think it's software... I've tried both DVI ports on both displays and seen the same problems. I borrowed a different video card (nVidia FX580) that supports DisplayPort video and I've found that the blinking has stopped but that the backlights on the display stay on all the time. This is an interesting data point but not really a workable solution: I'd really rather the displays sleep and wake up (like they did when I was using the DVI connectors) but without blinking at me.
I'd really like to hear from someone at Dell that my thousand-odd dollars entitles me to better treatment than this.

I never could find a solid fix, several workarounds for PC, none for Macs. The issue does not occur for everyone and we could never replicate it in our lab. Most customers gave up and disabled all powersave monitor functions. In any warranty, if the exchange is setup inside the first 21 days from the invoice date, the replacement will be New. Ouside of the first 21 days from the invoice date, the replacement will Refurbished/Used.

The 2408wfp is a shoddy monitor. Component overscans and is useless. I also had this random blanking out issue running Windows. It usually occurs most shortly after turning the monitor on. The u2410 I replaced it with doesn't have this issue, anyway.

I first got a 2408wfp new with my XPS630. After about a year, the monitor developed a vertical purple line from top to bottom.
I called tech support who sent a refurb monitor to replace it. The "refurb" was dirty and had scratches on the base. The back of it looked like it had been in a garage for years. Not to mention that there was a dead roach in the bottom of the box.
I called support about the poor condition of the "refurb" and they sent another refurb in its place. The second refurb at least was clean and seemed to work.
I say seemed because now I have the blinking problem that you have all described. I've also noticed that the resolution isn't what the original monitor was. When I look at digital pictures, they look grainy and pixilated. My 5 year old 20" Ultrasharp looks much better than my 24".
Is there anything I can do? I hate playing roulette with tech support.

I haven't been back to this thread in quite some time since I posted my same problem with the 2408 monitor... I finally gave up with replacement monitors and have come to the conclusion that it is a driver/monitor synch issue because different drivers from Dell, AMD and the default Windows drivers all seem to behave slightly differently...
I gave up early on the Dell drivers because in addition to blinking, they seemed to hang my computer at boot time and I haven't revisited them since my original purchase over a year ago. My experience with AMD drivers is that they have a synch issue when coming back from sleep mode (usually 3 or 4 consecutive blinks and then it's fine) and I also experienced an intermittent blinking problem even in the middle of normal usage. After doing a reinstall of Vista a few months ago I didn't install any separate driver and the default Windows Vista x64 driver which is an ATI Radeon 4800 Series driver V8.501 dated 6/2/2008 seems to only be plagued with the 3-4 blink problem after coming out of sleep mode. So that's what I'm running with for now.
I appreciate your efforts in trying to help me get this fixed, but am disappointed that Dell/AMD have not come up with a permanent solution.

Hi all,
I had the same blinking 2408WFP issue that many of you are experiencing. I have two 2408WFPs but only one was experiencing this issue, and it was connected via DVI (and using HDMI for a short time). The blinking happened when the monitor was connected to both the DVI and HDMI ports. I upgraded my video card to an ATI 5800 series card which included a DisplayPort connection. Once I connected the offending monitor to the DisplayPort connection, the blinking stopped completely. It has never occured in the last two months when previously it would happen at least a few times a day. Buying a new video card that supports a DisplayPort connection is not really an ideal solution--the cards can be expensive--but it works.

I also have the black-out problems with my 2408 A02 monitor: the unit would occasionally go dark for about 1 sec, and come back with a DVI or HDMI icon on upper-left corner. Here's some things that I notice:
First let's review the mating process of USB ports: first, the outer metal jackets make contact. Second, VCC and ground pins make contact. Third, the pair of data pins make contact. The blackout happens at the first step, so most certainly it's not a software problem. Maybe the microscopic spark caused by mismatching GND levels between my notebook and HDD caused the blackout.
I have no idea whether this is the same blackout problem, though. But, all other monitors seems to do fine when I'm plugging the HDD in.
4. Connecting the monitor to a Displayport on ATI HD5770 seems to work well (since Aug 29, till this post's timestamp and counting).5. I have a notebook with HDMI and a desktop, both give me the blackout problems with HDMI or DVI ports.
The blackout problem surely isn't too widespread; I didn't even hear any rumor about this in hardware forums before running into this myself and doing a extensive search. But according to the posts, a replacement often have the same problem. Also, dell tech guys haven't been able to reproduce this problem, according to chris.
So sending the monitors back to dell helped. Taking phenomenon 3 listed above into account, I wonder whether EMI susceptibility is the cause.

I must revive this thread much much later, as I just recently started having the flickering problem after switching to an ATI HD 4890 card. Are they still replacing the monitors for A02s? I purchased this 2408WFP in December of 2008, and it has worked fine until about 2 months ago when I switched PCs and videocard.

I have had luck using a new graphics card i bought later (crossfire) through the display port. The flickering never seemed to go away for me without going to vga on my old graphics card. I dont not know if they are switching out monitors at all anymore, i never had mine switched.
