Potential conflict before Vista SP2 install - sigmatel sound drivers

As far as I know, there was a potential conflict between SP1 installaton and sigmatel drivers on Dell Dimension machines. As far as I know, Dell still hasn't updated their sigmatel drivers.  From what I can tell, the company that acquired Sigamatel, IDT, says it's the OEM's responsibility to update the drivers (Dell, etc.). Based on the advice of some folks here, I took a chance (after backing up my system), temporarily uninstalled my sigmatel drivers, did the SP1 upgrade, re-installed my sound drivers from Dell's web site and all has seemed fine since. However, I'd like to know two things: Has this issue with the Sigmatel drivers and Vista service packs ever been resolved as Microsoft, Dell, and IDT/Sigmatel at the time seemed to think it was the responsibility of one of the other companies? (I just want the issue resolved, I don't care whose responsibility it is :) ). (If I hadn't taken a chance on SP1, I'd still be stuck without SP1, and miss out on SP2, and any future service packs). Also, now being on SP1, but with the same hardware and potentially with the same sigmatel conflict, is it safe to upgrade to SP2? The only other potential conflicts listed as potential problems are some pieces of software I have installed (which I will remove and/or disable before installing SP2 if I hear back that it's safe to do so). Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

I wasn't sure about sigmatel updates, but it seems to be a good sign that those who have upgraded to SP2 have had no problems as of yet (but as you said, what sound hardware they have is not known).

I understand about it still being the early stages (SP2 came out yesterday after all in final form) so am aware that I jumed the gun a little bit, but wil keep an eye on this forum just in case :). By the way, did you uninstall your sigmatel drivers first, then install SP2, then re-install the sigmatel drivers (that was a work around that worked for some folks including me) or do you just update with the sigmatel drivers in place?

In any case, I can wait a few days or so, and see what experiences users post here as they update to SP2 :) and the help is appreciated :).

There were SOME problems with the SP1 and the SigmaTel drivers, but not everyone experienced the problem.  As far as I know there has not been any updates from Dell and I can't say if the ones that had the problem on SP1 will also have the problem with SP2.  As Vista SP2 is just starting to roll out, we have no data on whether it will affect any of the systems with SigmaTel.  I know there are reports on the forum of users that have upgraded to SP2 and those users have not reported any problems, but I don't know what sound hardware they have or if they had problems with SP1.

Basically, you are asking something we don't know.  We are only users helping users on here and we can only go by our own experiences or what is posted on the forum.

My own experience with SP2, is that I installed it on my home built system that has an integrated IDT (SigmaTel) sound (this is only temporary and I have a new sound card that I just got shipped in to install).  I didn't have any problems upgrading to SP2 and it didn't affect the Integrated Audio, everything works.

On my E1705 For Service Pack 1 I just uninstalled the Sigmatel drivers, rebooted and let VISTA install it's own sound drivers.  I then was able to locate SP1, download it and install it.  With SP2 i just went to windows update and there it was.   I don't believe I have ever updated the driver.

I didn't uninstall anything when I installed the SP2.

I installed the release of SP2 last night with all firewalls and A/V running and it installed with no problems.

Based on the positive reports of Vista SP2 thus far, I took a chance (after disabling the 2 programs that had potential for conflict even though they were different versions than what MS listed (same program, newer version than listed), I installed SP2. I didn't even uninstalle the Sigmatel drivers and everything went fine. As far as I can tell, everything is working as it should, even my sound. Like you, boraxkarloff, I had issues getting SP1 installed and was surprised to see SP2 show up in Windows Update., but nevertheless everything went smoothly for me during and after the SP2 install.

I  had a nightmare trying to install Vista SP1. It never did show up on updates. I was surprised to see SP2 on updates and was expecting the worse. Fortunately, everything went smooth or so I thought. I later discovered I could only get stereo sound instead of 5.1 surround through my Sigma Tel audio. I uninstalled the driver and then reinstalled. So far everything is back to normal. Sigma Tel has been nothing but trouble. I'm tempted to go to a Creative sound card.
