Windows 64 bit OS not compatible
I just got a new XPS 1640 laptop with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64-bit Edition. I really like the laptop but I have found the 64 bit OS is not compatible with several business software programs I use. I have checked with the software developers and they will not be 64 bit compatible anytime in the near future. Does anyone have a suggestion for a fix? I hate to return the computer. Does anyone know if Dell can swap out the OS for the 32 bit edition?

Contact support or customer care and tell them you want the 32 bit version of Vista.

Thanks for your reply Jesse. I don't see a "customer support" choice on the Dell menu. Do you mean the order support choice? Do you have any idea which choice (technical support or order support) would be the most efficient? Anything you can do to help me avoid being transferred back and forth on the phone tree would be most appreciated. TIA idoc

Thank you for your quick answer yesterday. I have contacted customer support who sent me on to technical support and they agreed to ship me the 32 bit version of Windows Vista. I am eligible for the upgrade to Windows 7 so I asked the tech about that situation. He first told me to register for the Windows 7 64 bit version and said they would ship me the 32 bit version anyway. Later he implied that I might end up with the 64 bit upgrade and I should call customer service again and request the 32 bit version of Windows 7. Is there anything you can do to help simplify or clarify what I should do to get the Win 7 upgrade? Actually since I am going to have to go through an OS reinstall anyway it would be easier to start with Windows 7 32 bit. I know you have protocol you have to follow but any assistance is greatly appreciated.
