Optiplex GX620 with Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio and Windows 7

Hi...

I have a Optiplex GX620 with Bios version A11 and integrated 198X Audio.  I have installed Windows 7 on the system and it works fine with exception of Audio.  In recording device panel of Sound, it does not show AUX or Stereo Mix adapters as active.  Is DELL planning on issueing an driver update after Oct. 22, 2009?  Is there any place else that I can look for these updates drivers?

Thanks.

First we are mostly non-Dell employees on here - users helping users and this is not a "direct line to Dell".  You would need to contact Dell directly to see if they will support Win 7 on this model.  However, Vista is not supported (no drivers) so I would suspect Windows 7 will not be either as Vista drivers will work with Windows 7.  There are many "older" models that will not be supported by Dell for Windows 7.  Keep in mind Dell's primary business is selling new computers.

As the Dell implementation on many systems is a custom/proprietary implementation in many cases (that we have documented on this forum) "retail" drivers or drivers from some other vendor either will not install or will not work properly.   Windows XP drivers are not compatible with Win 7 (at least for the sound as Windows 7 uses the Vista sound applications and Vista handles sound differently than XP or older OS systems).

From posts on this forum, most users that want to run an Operating System that is not supported by Dell have installed PCI sound cards that will support the Operating System.  That is probably your best option too.

Try those drivers. The card is used in newer model optiplexes.

Hi Rafael...

Thanks for your response.  I tried to install the driver and received a message stating "The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware".

It failed for me too. I did however find that these drivers, ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp30501-31000/SP30738.exe, and they work.  This is a compaq driver, but life goes on. It seemded to fail the first time and then windows seven runs it with different settings and it worked.

I don't usually write on forums but I spent ages trying to find a driver for this and eventually had to manually add the soundcard using the hardware wizard and thought I'd share with people. I am using some intel drivers I have downloaded - I've written a short tutorial on my blog (http://www.bondysblog.co.uk/geek/windows-7-drivers-for-soundmax-adi-198x-fix/) on how I got it working and uploaded the driver to my site (I was using a Dell Optiplex GX280, so a slightly different machine to what your using, with this card onboard and the dell website only supported drivers upto XP). Hope this works for you too. :emotion-1:

There are Windows 7 drivers for GX620 in both 32 and 64bit flavours. The SoundMAX audio driver can be obtained from Windows Update, though if you want to isolate it for deployment purposes, you'll need to follow my instructions here:

http://pcloadletter.co.uk/2010/07/20/optiplex-gx620-windows-7-drivers/

Also the latest graphics driver for the Intel 945G which is available at Intel.com and on Windows Update has a problem with Adobe Flash. Details here:

Hi friend

I have a Optiplex GX620 as you and I have installed windows 7 ultimate from the net. I face the problem that you are complaning from. If you want to solve it you must have a genuie windows 7 you try to update your windows using windows update and the sound, Video and uncompleted drivers will be installed automatically.

note that after restarting your computer your sound card will work completely.

to be sure enter the COMPUTER MANGEMENT by right click on MY COMPUTER.

if your computer isn't genuine find WINDOWS 7 LOADER and install it.

the end...

Yes, Dell does not provide Windows 7 drivers for GX620 because they did not mark that desktop as Windows 7 compatible. But, you can get the Windows 7 drivers for the sound chip of the GX620 from Microsoft. I have tried all supposedly compatible drivers from Dell but no success.

You will need to follow the instructions from this website.

Right-clicking the device in Device Manager and selecting "Update Driver" can prompt Windows to search for the driver online; sometimes it will be found, after which it will be automatically downloaded and installed.

That was the way I got the Windows 7 driver for the Dimension 2350 Intel AC97 onboard audio.
