StudioXPS 1645 Intel Wifi Link 5300 AGN Dropping Connection

Hello.  I just recently got my studioXPS 1645 and i am having a problem staying connected via wireless.  I began noticing this problem when i try to surf the web and my connections would time out at various times.  Then i tried to use Skype and my calls would constantly get dropped.

I updated the wireless adapters firmware to the latest version.

I downloaded the intel PROset Wireless software.

I ran the Wifi Manual Diagnostic tool and noticed that at random times the Ping check would fail and it would produce this message.  Response: DHCP server No Response: default gateway.

I was wondering if this is a hardware problem, perhaps a faulty wireless card?

Anyone able to help me solve this annoying problem? Is this a router problem?  If i fix this for my router and take my laptop elsewhere and connect to another wifi signal, would the problem persist again?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I got my Studio XPS last night. I also noticed a similar issue when installing software via the Wireless network. I have a Linksys WRT300N which is a great wireless router. I can't seem to connect using wireless N at 270 Mbps. My wife has an Asus netbook and her laptop connects using wireless N with no issues. All I can connect is at 54 Mbps.

After looking at some other forums for other Dell laptops, there might be a wireless card or driver issue. This new wireless card should connect using wireless N. Do you have a way to test wireless N? Unfortunately there's no new firmware available for my Linksys router. I believe it's already end of life. They want you to upgrade to the new Linksys black flat routers, which I'm not sure are better then the one I have.

I was trying to obtain the latest wireless driver from the Dell support site, but I keep getting an error. Like their page is down for some reason. So, I can't confirm if my laptop has the latest wireless driver. I know there's a version 13 out there by Intel, but they recommend to use the one from Dell.

Let us know is you managed to fix your problem. I'll keep looking for answers and post them here.

Hello Leo,

I did manage to figure out the wireless problem.  I got my wireless card replaced because i thought it was a hardware issue, but apparently it is not.  The cause of the problem was that my encryption type for my wireless router was set for AES.  When i changed the encryption type to TKIP, the connections issues went away, and now i have a solid connection with no interruptions.

Give that a try, if the problem persists, try to upgrade your firmware/drivers.  If that does not work i suggest calling dell to get that wireless adapter replaced.

Good luck & Happy Holidays Leo.
