PowerEdge 2950 Generation 1 Vs Generation 2
Hello.
I wonder if someone could please explain to me the difference between the PowerEdge 2950 Generation 1 and Generation 2 systems.
I have searched and search but am struggling to find any literature which outlines the difference (I know there must be some).
I am mainly interested in the Motherboard spec and processor support.
As I believe (which may be wrong) the G1 will support 5000 series and 5100 series DUAL CORE C*** ONLY but not Quad Core, where as the G2 Will support 5000 & 5100 Dual Core along with the 5300 Series Quad Core. Is this correct ? Are there any other differences?
I am aware G1 or G2 will not support 5200 or 5400 Series but other than that I can not find any documents to say any other differences. could someone please advise.

Check out the information update pdf on the 2950's online manuals page (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/pe2950/en/index.htm). It has info about more updates than just the processors.

Thanks for that, I have already searched through the documentation and the only thing I can seem to find is :
If the front of your system chassis is labeled with a "II," your system is upgradeable to the Quad-Core
Intel® Xeon® Processor 5300 series
Which presumably means the 1st generation did not take 5300 series Quad core CPUs (only 5000 +5100 series) ??

The first generation motherboards only supported the Dempsey and Woodcrest procs which are only dual core.
