Dell Optiplex 170L did not come with a CD drive :(
I am TRYING to install XP on this Optiplex but it didn't come with an optical drive, so now I'm trying to install a CD drive but the BIOS (A07) won't see it and I can't find any instructions anywhere! :emotion-39: The furthest I've got: EJECTING THE TRAY. :emotion-52:
- First off, I don't know what cable to use to connect to the motherboard (40 wire or 80 wire?).
- Secondly, I don't know where to plug it on the motherboard.
- Third, I don't know if I'm supposed to set the jumpers to Master, Slave or Cable Select.
- 4th: Are the hard drive and the optical drive supposed to be on the same cable? (you know, one says Master, the other says Slave)
- And last but not least, is my drive even compatible? It's a Khypermedia and I have 2 of them. I always though with CD drives "if the show fits..."
How ignorant of me to think I could just stick in any random CD drive and go. The worst part about all of this is that (supposedly) I'm a "computer technician", but that's another story. :emotion-60:

Also have an external CD drive, but it won't see that either. :(

Hi Nocr,
Here's the manual. I'm sure that will be helpful. The jumper should be set to cable select and you should use an 80-wire cable.

I have tried 3 drives with 80-wire cable all set to Cable Select and to no avail.
Do I put the CD drive on the same cable as the hard drive or does it go into one of the other slots on the motherboard?
