Help please to get sound back !!!

After doing cleanup on my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop I have lost audio.  I have tried getting driver downloads from Dell support site.  When I try to load R157449_Medi_Direct_3_Patch,   I get message "Unable to install patch. YOur system must have POerCinema version 4.7 installed.  INstallation will abort."   Anyone got any clues as to how to resolve. Tried also copying files and directories from a working Dell to this one but to no avail.  When I go to Sound and Audio in Control panel there are no audio devices loaded.  My working laptop has SigmaTel as device.  How do I get that active and linked as my audio device?  Help !!!

What do you mean by cleanup -- did you re-install the operating system?

I wouldn't worry about that patch -- it is unrelated to the audio.

Tried also copying files and directories from a working Dell to this one but to no avail.

That won't work with drivers -- you have to install them to get them in the Registry.

Please see The "No Audio" Symptom FAQ. If the computer passes the Dell Diagnostics audio tests then try System Restore. If no luck then re-install the Sigmatel audio driver -- it is under the Audio category on your download page. Be sure to not install the other items in that category before the Sigmatel driver is working. If you need to reply please name your operating system.

- No, I didn't try re-installing the operating system.  I was clearing out old user accounts,  uninstaling various old bits of software and generally cleaning up the machine,  I suspect I uninstalled software that I shouldn't have.

I wouldn't worry about that patch -- it is unrelated to the audio.

- ok thanks.

See "Using System Restore" in The "No Audio" Symptom FAQ  -- Section lll, 3, f (the end of the FAQ). It does not delete data from the hard drive, just returns the Registry to an earlier configuration. There is a chance that it will undo a change you made that caused the audio to cease working.

If you reply please supply the name your operating system.
