Optiplex 790 PCI Serial port driver

I am setting up a Optiplex 790 with windows xp sp3 and am having trouble finding a driver. Under the device manager, then under other devices, it shows PCI serial port with and exclamation point next to it.

It is a new computer with an I5 in it.

Thanks in advance.

The driver you need is the Intel Unified AMT 7 Management Interface Driver located under the CHIPSET group. If it doesn't update the driver from the setup then you will need to point updated drivers wizard to the extracted folder\drivers\SOL. That will install the driver.

It may be Windows XP, as XP does not have all the plug and play drivers that Vista and Windows 7 have.   Does the serial port card vendor have drivers?

Check the Optiplex 790 driver downloads for XP. Look under the "Communication" section.

You need to install the driver during Windows Setup using the F6 prompt an loading the driver from a floppy disk.  Alternatively, you can use nLiteOS.com to integrate the drivers into your installation files (this will create a new installation CD).

You must use this driver:

If you use nLite (correctly), you don't need to use F6.  You also cannot simply put the files on a CD with the installation files ... it must be integrated into the proper places, which is what nLite does.

No, F6 doesn't work as it disables the usb drive once it loads the drivers.

What you need to do is go into your system settings by pressing F2 when the computer starts. Go down to System Configuration and then to SATA Operation. In there change the setting to ATA, press Apply and reboot. you can then install XP. If you want to enable AHCI or RAID you will need to install the SATA drivers after windows is installed. Using the ATA settings doesn't make much performance difference to using AHCI. If you need the AHCI drivers after windows is installed, let me know and I will upload my custom build driver for you to download.

You don't have to turn off AHCI, as nLite should work, but it is certainly easier if you don't care about turning off all the features on your SATA drive that makes SATA better than the the ancient ATA/IDE standard.

If you want to take the "easy" way and install in ATA mode, then switch after installation ... you don't need a custom-built driver, but you do need to make a registry edit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci and set Start to 0, then install the driver I provided above.

I had a DELL tech help me with this deivce. I had no luck using the drivers in the Chipset section but he was able to get a driver from Intel's web site. Try downloading this file called infinst_autol.zip from intel's web site at

downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx

Let me know if it works.
