Realtek sound driver needs reinstall every reboot

Dear Dell Community,

I have a problem with my new Dell XPS 15 L502X. Here is my basic situation:

I replaced the factory Windows 7 Home Premium with Windows 7 Professional, since my university has a site license for it. The installation went smoothly and all the drivers installed as normal.

The only problem I am having is with the Realtek sound driver. The sound was working normally when the driver was installed, but then when the computer was restarted, the picture of the speaker on the bottom right of the screen had a red 'X' on it, indicating that no audio device was detected. Clicking on this icon brings up the Windows troubleshooter, which suggests that I reinstall the Realtek driver. When I do this, the driver is installed and the sound works normally.  However, upon rebooting the system, the same symptoms occur again, requiring a reinstallation of the drivers.

It is certainly a nuisance to have to reinstall the drivers every time. As a result of this issue, the Creative X-Fi MB package is unable to detect my software driver, so I am unable to use this software.

I am wondering if anyone else has had this same problem, and if there is a fix for this? I searched through for recent posts, but didn't see anybody with this specific issue.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Kenji

Hi Kenji,

Welcome to the Community. Did you install the drivers in the correct order after reinstalling Win 7, if you do not install it in the correct order some devices may not work correctly. Below is the link on how to install drivers in the correct order.

Royan,

I am experiencing the same problem as Kenji: Every time that I reboot my Dell Studio 1458 laptop, I need to re-install the audio drivers.  Except that, in my case, this has been happening since the day I bought the computer and first received it from the factory.  I have never been able to have the sound card working right off the bat when I turn on or reboot the computer.

I thought I'd use the same procedure you proposed to address Kenji's problem, but the link you supplied above ("support.dell.com/.../document") is no longer valid.

Can you please share this troubleshooting / driver re-installation procedure again?

Thank you,

Rodrigo

That's not good if the problem existed right out of the box, and it's too late now to return the computer. The next time it happens check that the Audio Service is running. Go to Start>Run and type "services.msc" (without quotes) then hit the 'Enter' key (or click 'ok'). The Services window will appear. Scroll down until you find "Windows Audio" towards the bottom of the list. Check that it is enabled, set to automatic, and running. If it isn't, double click on it and change the Startup type to Automatic, then click Start, Apply, and OK.

I just clicked on it and it worked for me -- went to the article.  Maybe you need to paste the address into your browser. I don't see how that article pertains to your situation. It is about installing drivers in the correct order after re-installing the operating system.
