IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Drivers
Hi forum people,
I have just brought a Dell Latitude D620 from a local company who were selling up, brilliant machine apart from the 'no sound' issue. No matter how many times I uninstall the sound card and re install it the driver cannot be found and installed, I cannot roll back the driver because the previous owners never backed it up. Please someone help me before I hang myself.

PS your audio driver is not an IDT as in the title of your post, it is the Sigmatel R171789. Get it from the D620 downloads page.

Andy, if the previous owner had re-installed Windows before selling the laptop, they might not have completed the installation in the correct order. In such a case, you usually do not have to do a complete re-installation, just follow the correct order as explained in section 7 of the Audio Drivers FAQ.
If that doesn't fix it, there might be another problem. Most of the possible issues are discussed in the No Audio FAQ.

Hi Jim,
The title of the post is exactly what I copied from the device manager, whereas the installed component is struck through in yellow and marked as non responsive, with the advice to uninstall and re-install the component as of which has no improvement. I installed all the driver downloads for my machine this morning after scanning it - this driver was not on the list that appeared :(
Many many thanks for your help so far, when I get back home I will endeavour to try your solutions and repair the problem, I would hate to not have full use of the D620 as it is a beautiful piece of kit

Hi JIm, as you can see from this screen shot from my machine the issue is definately listed as IDT High Definition Audio Codec, just wish I could put this problem to bed :(

Andy, double check that your machine is a D620. If so it definitely has Sigmatel audio components on the motherboard and uses a Sigmatel driver. The Sigmatel company was later bought by IDT, and IDT based their drivers on Sigmatel's , so it is possible that someone managed to load an IDT driver into your system and that could be what the Device Manager is seeing. Remove the IDT driver. Go to your hard drive
c:\dell\drivers\Rxxxxxx
Expand all folders and sub-folders there. Delete all folders that have a sub-folder named "WDM". Those will be the audio driver folders and it is safe to delete them.
When you have cleaned out all audio drivers then install the Sigmatel R171789 driver (assuming you have already installed the System Software and the Mobile Chipset driver).
