Raid 5 in 4300 Power Edge fails often when booting - want to migrate array to a desktop
We have a Dell Power Edge 4300 that is old and failing, and since I want to retrieve a few rolodex -non critical by desirious - files I would love to move the array onto a desktop perhaps with a USB drive, and copy them off. Will that work? will the drivers installed in the SCSI array stop me from doing this?

Yes, if you are talking about "cloning" your OS from the drives/array in the 4300 to flash drive, then to a drive in another computer, it will very likely not even boot. I might suggest looking into options to convert your 4300 OS to a virtual machine, then running it inside of Hyper-V, VMWare, etc. ... or just copy the important data and rebuild the OS on another machine (I know ... sometimes that's easier said than done, if the important data is the settings/configurations within your OS/programs).

Actually, I didn't want to go that far - just have the array wake once in a desktop built just for that purpose, with a USB drive mounted as a data drive only, and transfer some db files from that array to the USB - the USB doesn't have to boot, nor does the array have to boot again. I would then put that USB, again mounted only as a data drive in my xp workstation and be able to access the files that I care about. -Jay

So, you are planning to put the RAID card into a desktop? How then will you power the drives - leave them powered inside the server?
