Compression results depend on the type of data. Things like video files don't compress much. Text files on the other hand typically compress quite well.
Enabling (hardware) compression is done from the backup software. You may want to open a support ticket with Brightstor support as I haven't seen many people ask about this specific software and have seen even fewer replies on these boards about that software.
