hard drive error warning, before and after computer restore

Hi guys,

My sister has a dell inspiron 1545 which was purchased running windows 7 about three years ago.

A few days ago she found that the computer was frozen at windows startup. She also mentioned that there had bin an error message, I assume the same hard disk error that I am getting now.

You may have seen this problem before, do I need to get the hard rive replaced??

Gratefull for your help,

Alex

Hi Alex,

You didn't say what the error is, but restoring the operating system is not going to fix a hardware problem with the hard drive. You could test the drive using the Dell diagnostics on your drivers and utilities disc if you want to be sure.

I don't know what the exact problem is. The error was, and i quote, "windows has detected a hard disk problem".  I will try the "f12" dell diagnostics, and post what it says, thanks for your help :)

Ok, I ran the tests and got 1 error. This was the message:

DST short test:

Error code 0151

msg: error code 2000-0151

msg: hard drive 0 incorect status: 5E No additional sense information

All other tests it passed.

Dell recommends you remove and reinstall the hard drive for that error. Then run the Drive Self Test (DST) from the diagnostics to determine if the previous error has been corrected. If not, replace the drive.
